Blood in the stool?

Hello Doctor, last week after I had a bowel movement, I noticed a small amount of blood on the toilet paper.
Since then, there hasn't been much blood, but I do experience pain during bowel movements.
However, yesterday I had another bowel movement and there was more blood than last time, resembling menstrual blood, and it was painful when I passed it.
I just had another bowel movement and there was blood again along with pain.
Now I also have some abdominal pain.

More Info

Rectal bleeding can be a concerning symptom, and it is important to understand its potential causes, associated symptoms, and when to seek medical help. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing rectal bleeding accompanied by pain during bowel movements and some abdominal discomfort.

Causes of Rectal Bleeding
1. Hemorrhoids: One of the most common causes of rectal bleeding, hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lower rectum or anus. They can cause pain, itching, and bleeding, especially during bowel movements.

2. Anal Fissures: These are small tears in the lining of the anus, often caused by passing hard stools. They can lead to sharp pain and bleeding during bowel movements.

3. Diverticular Disease: Diverticulosis involves the formation of small pouches in the colon wall, which can sometimes become inflamed or infected, leading to diverticulitis. This condition can cause bleeding and abdominal pain.

4. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis can cause inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, leading to symptoms such as rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, and changes in bowel habits.

5. Colorectal Polyps or Cancer: While less common, polyps can bleed, and colorectal cancer can also present with rectal bleeding, especially in older adults or those with risk factors.

6. Infections: Certain infections can cause inflammation and bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract.

Symptoms to Watch For
In addition to rectal bleeding and pain during bowel movements, other symptoms that may warrant immediate medical attention include:
- Severe abdominal pain: If the pain is intense or persistent, it could indicate a more serious condition.

- Changes in bowel habits: Diarrhea or constipation that lasts more than a few days.

- Fever: A fever may indicate an infection or inflammation.

- Weight loss: Unexplained weight loss can be a sign of a more serious underlying condition.

- Dizziness or fainting: These symptoms could indicate significant blood loss.

When to Seek Help
Given your symptoms of rectal bleeding, pain during bowel movements, and abdominal discomfort, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly. You should consider visiting a healthcare provider if:
- The bleeding persists or worsens.

- You experience significant pain that does not improve.

- You notice any of the additional concerning symptoms mentioned above.

Diagnosis and Treatment
When you visit a healthcare provider, they may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend diagnostic tests such as a colonoscopy, which allows for direct visualization of the colon and rectum. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment options may include:
- Dietary changes: Increasing fiber intake can help soften stools and reduce straining during bowel movements, which may alleviate symptoms.

- Topical treatments: For hemorrhoids or anal fissures, topical creams or ointments may provide relief.

- Medications: Anti-inflammatory medications or medications specific to IBD may be prescribed.

- Surgical options: In cases of severe hemorrhoids, fissures, or polyps, surgical intervention may be necessary.

Conclusion
In summary, rectal bleeding can arise from various causes, and it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. Given your recent experiences with bleeding and pain, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure a better outcome.
