Itchy Discomfort: Common Symptoms and Relief Tips - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Itchy skin can be really bothersome?

Hello, doctor.
About two weeks ago, I had sexual intercourse with a condom.
A week later, I started experiencing intense itching in my genital area, which has continued until now.
At times, it even hurts (I have never experienced this before).
Upon inspection, it appears red and swollen (it might also be red from scratching).
I would like to ask what symptoms this might indicate.
Are there any measures I can take to relieve the itching before seeing a doctor?

Yuki, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/15

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, based on your description of symptoms, it is more likely that you are experiencing contact dermatitis or folliculitis.
It is advisable to keep the perineal area clean and dry, avoid wearing tight clothing, and consider soaking in a bath to alleviate symptoms.
If symptoms persist, please consult a physician for diagnosis and treatment.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

It sounds like you're experiencing some discomfort and itching in your genital area following a recent sexual encounter. Given that you used a condom, it's less likely that this is a sexually transmitted infection (STI), but it's still important to consider a few possibilities.

The symptoms you're describing—itching, redness, and swelling—could be indicative of several conditions. One common cause of these symptoms is a yeast infection, which can occur due to changes in the vaginal flora. Other possibilities include bacterial vaginosis, contact dermatitis (an allergic reaction to a product such as soap, detergent, or even the condom material), or an irritation from friction during intercourse.

Here are some steps you can take to relieve the itching and discomfort before you see a doctor:
1. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from scented soaps, lotions, and feminine hygiene products, as these can exacerbate irritation. Use mild, unscented soap for cleansing the area.

2. Wear Loose Clothing: Tight clothing can increase irritation. Opt for breathable cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothing to allow air circulation.

3. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the affected area can help reduce swelling and provide temporary relief from itching.

4. Over-the-Counter Treatments: You might consider using over-the-counter antifungal creams if you suspect a yeast infection. These are generally safe and can provide relief. However, if the symptoms persist or worsen, it’s essential to consult a healthcare provider.

5. Avoid Scratching: While it may be tempting to scratch the area, doing so can lead to further irritation and even infection. Try to keep your hands away from the area as much as possible.

6. Hydration and Diet: Staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet can support your immune system and overall health, which may help your body combat any potential infections.

7. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms that may arise, such as unusual discharge, odor, or fever, as these can provide important information to your healthcare provider.

It's crucial to see a healthcare professional if the symptoms do not improve within a few days, if they worsen, or if you develop additional symptoms. A doctor can perform a thorough examination, possibly including a swab or culture, to determine the exact cause of your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment.

In summary, while there are some self-care measures you can take to alleviate your discomfort, consulting with a healthcare provider is the best course of action to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Remember, your health is important, and addressing these symptoms early can help prevent further complications.
