Am I pregnant?

Hello Doctor: I had a miscarriage on March 8th.
About two weeks later, around the week of the 22nd, I tested positive on an ovulation test and had sexual intercourse.
Around the 29th, I started feeling nauseous and sometimes had chest pain, but upon closer inspection, there was none.
On April 1st, I used a pregnancy test but it showed no positive result; however, that day I noticed brown discharge.
On April 2nd, I tested again with morning urine and still got a negative result, but that day I noticed some blood streaks in the discharge when I went to the bathroom.
Could you please advise if this is my period or if I might be pregnant again? Should I see a gynecologist for a thorough examination?

Mrs. Hsu, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/02

It sounds like you’ve been through a very challenging time, especially after experiencing a miscarriage and now dealing with the uncertainty of your current symptoms. Let’s break down your situation and provide some clarity on what you might be experiencing.

Firstly, after a miscarriage, it’s common for women to have a range of symptoms as their body readjusts. The presence of nausea, breast tenderness, and changes in discharge can be indicative of hormonal fluctuations that occur as your body returns to its pre-pregnancy state. However, these symptoms can also suggest a new pregnancy, especially if you had a positive ovulation test and engaged in sexual intercourse around that time.

The fact that you experienced a positive ovulation test indicates that your body is gearing up for another potential pregnancy. However, the negative pregnancy tests you took on April 1st and April 2nd suggest that you may not be pregnant at this time. It’s important to note that it can take time for hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) levels to rise enough to be detected by home pregnancy tests, especially if you are testing very early.
The brown discharge and the presence of blood streaks can be concerning, especially after a recent miscarriage. Brown discharge is often old blood, which can be normal, but it’s essential to monitor any changes. If the bleeding becomes heavier or is accompanied by severe pain, it would be wise to seek medical attention promptly.

Given your recent miscarriage and the symptoms you are experiencing, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough examination and possibly an ultrasound to check the status of your uterus and ensure that everything is as it should be. They can also provide guidance on what to expect in terms of your menstrual cycle and any potential for a new pregnancy.

In terms of your emotional well-being, it’s completely normal to feel anxious or uncertain after experiencing a miscarriage. Many women find it helpful to talk to someone about their feelings, whether that’s a friend, family member, or a mental health professional. It’s important to give yourself grace during this time and to acknowledge that your body is going through a lot of changes.

In summary, while your symptoms could indicate either the return of your menstrual cycle or a new pregnancy, the negative pregnancy tests suggest that you may not be pregnant at this time. However, given your recent history and current symptoms, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation. They can provide the reassurance and care you need during this time. Remember, you are not alone in this experience, and seeking help is a positive step towards understanding your health.
