Image distortion
Hello Dr.
Wang: Currently, my left eye has a myopia of -11.00 diopters and my right eye has a myopia of -10.75 diopters.
I also have mild glaucoma in my left eye.
At the end of last year, I noticed a phenomenon where straight lines appear curved towards the nasal side of my visual field near the optic disc in my left eye, specifically in the non-central visual field.
I would like to inquire about the cause of this straight line curvature phenomenon.
(I previously had an examination by a retinal specialist, but the doctor advised to just monitor it, stating that there was no issue.)

Hello, I recommend that you first look up "AMSLER GRID." If you notice any distortion of straight lines, it would be advisable to seek further medical consultation.

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding the visual distortion you are experiencing, specifically the bending of straight lines in your peripheral vision. This phenomenon can be quite concerning, especially given your history of high myopia and mild glaucoma in your left eye.
The distortion you describe, where straight lines appear bent or curved, is known as "metamorphopsia." This condition is often associated with issues in the retina, particularly in the macula, which is responsible for central vision and visual acuity. However, since you mentioned that your retina was examined and the doctor advised observation without immediate concern, it suggests that the issue may not be directly related to retinal detachment or significant macular degeneration at this time.
In individuals with high myopia, the shape of the eyeball can be elongated, which can lead to various complications, including retinal changes and increased risk for glaucoma. The presence of mild glaucoma in your left eye is also noteworthy, as it can affect peripheral vision and overall visual perception. Glaucoma can lead to damage of the optic nerve, which may contribute to visual distortions or changes in how you perceive your surroundings.
The bending of lines, particularly in your peripheral vision, could also be attributed to a phenomenon known as "visual field defects," which can occur due to various reasons, including optic nerve issues or even neurological conditions. Given that you have a blind spot near the optic nerve head, it is essential to monitor any changes in your vision closely.
While your doctor has suggested observation, it is crucial to maintain regular follow-ups, especially considering your high myopia and glaucoma. If you notice any worsening of symptoms, such as increased distortion, loss of vision, or new visual symptoms, you should seek immediate evaluation from an eye care professional.
In terms of management and adaptation, there are a few strategies you can consider:
1. Regular Eye Exams: Ensure you have regular check-ups with your ophthalmologist to monitor your eye health, especially given your history of high myopia and glaucoma.
2. Visual Aids: Depending on the severity of your distortion, using specialized lenses or visual aids may help improve your visual experience. Discuss this with your optometrist or ophthalmologist.
3. Eye Health Maintenance: Maintain a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet rich in antioxidants (like vitamins C and E, lutein, and zeaxanthin), regular exercise, and proper hydration. These can contribute to overall eye health.
4. Manage Glaucoma: If you are prescribed medication for glaucoma, ensure you adhere to the treatment plan. Proper management of intraocular pressure is crucial in preventing further damage to the optic nerve.
5. Visual Rehabilitation: If the distortion significantly impacts your daily life, consider consulting with a vision rehabilitation specialist who can provide strategies and tools to help you adapt to your visual changes.
6. Stress Management: Anxiety about your vision can exacerbate the perception of visual distortions. Engaging in stress-reducing activities such as mindfulness, yoga, or other relaxation techniques can be beneficial.
In conclusion, while the straight line distortion you are experiencing may not currently indicate a severe underlying issue, it is essential to remain vigilant and proactive about your eye health. Regular monitoring and open communication with your healthcare providers will be key in managing your condition effectively. If you have further concerns or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to seek a second opinion or further evaluation. Your vision is invaluable, and taking steps to protect it is paramount.
