Distorted vision?

I have myopia of about -3.00 diopters in both eyes.
Recently, for the past week, I have been experiencing distortion in my vision (I have already visited an ophthalmologist, and the examination results showed that my retina and macula are normal).
What other reasons could cause visual distortion?

Hello, regarding your description, it is still possible that you have macular degeneration.
I would like to know where you had your examination.
If possible, please visit a larger regional hospital or medical center for a better evaluation.
If the macula is normal, we should check for other conditions, such as issues with the cornea or lens.
Central serous chorioretinopathy could also cause visual distortion.

In Taiwan, the ophthalmology department at Puzi Hospital is available on the following schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, and Wednesday from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
Please note that online responses can only serve as a reference; it is essential to seek medical attention at a healthcare facility if necessary.
I hope to have the opportunity to assist you.

Best regards,
Gao Pilin

Visual distortion can be a perplexing and concerning symptom, especially when you have already undergone a thorough eye examination that ruled out issues with the retina and macula. While it’s reassuring that those critical areas of your eye are healthy, the experience of distorted vision can stem from various other factors that may not be directly related to structural problems in the eye itself.

1. Refractive Errors: Even with a prescription for myopia (nearsightedness), if your glasses or contact lenses are not up to date, or if there are changes in your vision that have not been corrected, this can lead to visual distortion. It’s essential to ensure that your prescription is accurate and that you are wearing the correct lenses for your vision needs.

2. Binocular Vision Issues: Sometimes, the eyes may not work together effectively, leading to binocular vision dysfunction. This can cause symptoms such as double vision or distortion. Conditions like convergence insufficiency, where the eyes struggle to work together when focusing on near objects, can lead to visual discomfort and distortion.

3. Eye Fatigue: Prolonged periods of focusing on screens or reading can lead to eye strain, also known as asthenopia. Symptoms can include blurred or distorted vision, headaches, and discomfort. Taking regular breaks using the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds) can help alleviate these symptoms.

4. Neurological Factors: Sometimes, visual distortion can be linked to neurological issues rather than purely ocular ones. Conditions such as migraines can cause visual disturbances, including aura symptoms that may manifest as distortions in your visual field. If you have a history of migraines or other neurological symptoms, this could be a contributing factor.

5. Psychological Factors: Stress and anxiety can also manifest physically, including in the form of visual distortions. If you are experiencing heightened stress or anxiety, it may be worth exploring relaxation techniques or speaking with a mental health professional.

6. Corneal Issues: Even if the retina and macula are healthy, issues with the cornea, such as irregularities or scarring, can cause distortion. Conditions like keratoconus, where the cornea becomes thin and cone-shaped, can lead to significant visual distortion.

7. Dry Eye Syndrome: Insufficient tear production can lead to dry eyes, which may cause fluctuating vision and distortion. If you experience dryness, irritation, or a gritty sensation in your eyes, this could be a contributing factor.

8. Medications and Systemic Conditions: Certain medications can have side effects that affect vision. Additionally, systemic conditions such as diabetes or hypertension can lead to changes in vision. If you are on any medications or have underlying health conditions, it’s worth discussing these with your healthcare provider.

Given your situation, it would be advisable to follow up with your eye care professional or consider consulting a specialist, such as a neuro-ophthalmologist, if the distortion persists. They can perform more specialized tests to determine if there are underlying neurological issues contributing to your symptoms.

In summary, while your eye health appears to be stable based on your recent examination, visual distortion can arise from a variety of factors beyond just the health of the retina and macula. It’s essential to consider all potential causes and seek further evaluation if necessary to ensure that you receive appropriate care and management for your symptoms.
