Localized swelling and pain on the left side of the face?

Hello doctor, I have localized swelling and pain on the left side of my face that has persisted for three days.
It started with a lump around the temple area and has since spread to the area around my ear, with small round bumps appearing sequentially that are painful to the touch.
Can you provide an initial assessment of what symptoms this might indicate? Additionally, if I need to visit a hospital, which department should I choose? Thank you for your assistance.

Xiao Lin, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/09

Localized pain and swelling on one side of the face can be concerning and may arise from various underlying conditions. Based on your description of the symptoms, including the presence of painful lumps around the temple and ear area, there are several potential causes to consider.

1. Infection: One possibility is that you may have an infection, such as a skin infection (like cellulitis) or an infection of the salivary glands (sialadenitis). These conditions can cause localized swelling and tenderness. If the lumps are warm to the touch, red, or accompanied by fever, this could indicate an infectious process.

2. Inflammation: Conditions such as temporal arteritis (inflammation of the blood vessels in the temples) or other inflammatory disorders could also cause localized pain and swelling. Temporal arteritis is particularly concerning as it can lead to serious complications, including vision loss if not treated promptly.

3. Cysts or Tumors: The lumps you are feeling could also be sebaceous cysts or other benign growths. While these are generally not serious, they can become inflamed or infected, leading to pain and swelling.

4. Dental Issues: Given the proximity of the symptoms to the jaw and ear, dental problems such as an abscessed tooth or issues with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) could also be contributing factors. TMJ disorders can cause pain in the jaw and surrounding areas, and sometimes lead to swelling.

5. Neurological Issues: While less common, conditions affecting the nerves, such as trigeminal neuralgia or even facial nerve issues, could manifest as localized pain. However, these typically present with different characteristics of pain.

Given the duration of your symptoms (three days) and the nature of the pain and swelling, it is advisable to seek medical attention. The best course of action would be to visit a healthcare provider who specializes in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) disorders, as they can evaluate both the facial structures and any potential issues with the salivary glands. Alternatively, a visit to a primary care physician or a neurologist may also be appropriate, especially if there are concerns about nerve involvement.

During your visit, be prepared to provide detailed information about your symptoms, including when they started, any associated symptoms (like fever, changes in vision, or difficulty chewing), and any recent injuries or infections. This information will help the healthcare provider make a more accurate diagnosis.

In summary, localized pain and swelling on the left side of the face can arise from various conditions, including infections, inflammation, dental issues, or even neurological problems. It is essential to seek medical evaluation to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
