Wet and sticky?
Recently, I had external hemorrhoids that had just healed.
I bought an ointment from the pharmacy and applied it for a week, which made the swelling go away, but there is still a soft lump outside the anus.
Now that the hemorrhoids have healed, the skin on both sides of the groin has started to itch (but I use talcum powder after each shower to relieve the itching).
The area around the anus often feels suddenly wet, and when I touch it, my fingers feel sticky, like I've touched pus.
I want to know what this could be.
Is it eczema?

Dr. Xu Kaixi reply Surgery
Based on your description, it is more likely to be eczema or an allergic reaction around the anal area.
It is recommended to visit a gastroenterology or surgical outpatient clinic for further examination and treatment, which may include the application of topical corticosteroid ointment.

After hemorrhoid surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to experience a variety of symptoms, including itching, wetness, and stickiness around the anal area. These symptoms can be concerning, especially if they persist after the initial healing phase. Let's break down the potential causes of your symptoms and discuss what you can do to manage them effectively.
1. Post-Surgical Healing: After surgery for external hemorrhoids, the area may take some time to heal completely. It's possible that the soft lump you feel is part of the healing process. Sometimes, scar tissue can form, leading to a residual lump that may feel different from the surrounding tissue. This is generally not a cause for alarm unless it becomes painful or shows signs of infection.
2. Itching: Itching in the anal region can be attributed to several factors. One common cause is irritation from moisture or hygiene products. If you are using powders or creams, ensure they are suitable for sensitive skin and do not contain irritants. Additionally, excessive moisture can lead to skin irritation, which may cause itching. It is essential to keep the area clean and dry, and using a gentle, unscented soap can help.
3. Wetness and Stickiness: The sensation of wetness and stickiness could be due to a few reasons:
- Mucous Discharge: After surgery, it is not unusual for the body to produce extra mucus as part of the healing process. This can sometimes feel sticky and may be mistaken for pus. If the discharge is clear or slightly yellow and does not have a foul odor, it is likely normal.
- Infection: If the discharge is accompanied by a foul smell, increased pain, or fever, it could indicate an infection, and you should seek medical attention promptly.
- Skin Conditions: Conditions like eczema or contact dermatitis can also cause itching and irritation. If the skin around the anal area is red, inflamed, or has a rash, it may be worth consulting a dermatologist.
4. Hygiene Practices: Maintaining good hygiene is crucial after hemorrhoid surgery. Gently clean the area with warm water after bowel movements and avoid using harsh soaps or wipes that may irritate the skin. Pat the area dry with a soft towel instead of rubbing it. If you experience itching, consider using a barrier cream or ointment that is safe for use in that area to protect the skin.
5. When to Seek Help: If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to consult your healthcare provider. They can assess the area for any complications, such as infection or other skin conditions. They may also recommend treatments such as topical steroids for inflammation or other medications to alleviate your symptoms.
In summary, while some itching, wetness, and stickiness can be normal after hemorrhoid surgery, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. Keeping the area clean and dry, using appropriate hygiene products, and consulting with your healthcare provider if symptoms persist will help ensure a smooth recovery. If you suspect a skin condition or infection, seeking medical advice is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment.
