Nipple foreign body

Hello doctor, I can't remember how long it's been, but there is a raised bump on my nipple that resembles a small pimple.
It doesn't hurt and has not caused any issues for many years.
However, I have not had the courage to seek medical attention.
I hope you can help me understand what this might be.
It is only on one side of the nipple and is about the size of a grain of rice.

kd, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/04/19

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology

Medical regulations state that "a physician must personally examine a patient before administering treatment or prescribing medication," and therefore, online diagnosis is not permissible.
Without a direct observation of the lesion, confirmation cannot be made.
If you are experiencing significant distress, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly.

When it comes to unilateral nipple bumps, particularly those that resemble small pimples and are painless, there are several potential explanations. Given that this bump has persisted for years without causing any discomfort or changes, it is likely benign. However, understanding the nature of such bumps is essential for proper management and peace of mind.

One common cause of a painless bump on the nipple is a condition known as a sebaceous cyst. These cysts form when the sebaceous glands, which produce oil to lubricate the skin, become blocked. They can appear as small, round lumps and are typically harmless. Another possibility is a condition called a Montgomery gland enlargement, which involves the small glands located around the areola. These glands can become more prominent and may resemble small pimples, especially during hormonal changes such as menstruation or pregnancy.

Another consideration is a benign condition known as a papilloma, which is a small, wart-like growth that can occur in the ducts of the nipple. While papillomas are usually benign, they can sometimes lead to discharge or changes in the nipple, so monitoring any changes is important.

In rare cases, unilateral nipple bumps can be indicative of more serious conditions, such as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) or other forms of breast cancer. However, these conditions typically present with additional symptoms, such as changes in the skin, discharge, or pain. Since your bump has remained unchanged for years and is painless, the likelihood of it being malignant is low.

It is important to note that while many nipple bumps are benign, any persistent changes in the breast should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. A dermatologist or a breast specialist can perform a thorough examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as a mammogram or ultrasound, to assess the bump further. In some cases, a biopsy may be necessary to definitively diagnose the nature of the bump.

In terms of management, if the bump is confirmed to be benign and asymptomatic, no immediate treatment may be necessary. However, if it becomes bothersome or if there are any changes in size, shape, or associated symptoms, surgical removal may be considered.

In conclusion, while the bump on your nipple is likely benign, it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider for a proper evaluation. They can provide reassurance, rule out any serious conditions, and discuss potential treatment options if necessary. Regular self-examinations and awareness of any changes in your breast tissue are crucial for maintaining breast health. If you have concerns or notice any new symptoms, do not hesitate to seek medical advice.
