Knee contusion?

Yesterday, I collided with someone else's knee on the inner side while playing basketball.
There is no noticeable swelling at this point.
However, I can only bend my knee to a certain angle when walking, and touching that area causes severe pain.
I'm not sure if it's a ligament tear or a sprain.

Knee injuries resulting from collisions, such as the one you experienced while playing basketball, can lead to a variety of symptoms and potential damage to the knee's structures. Based on your description, it sounds like you may be experiencing a significant injury, possibly involving the ligaments or cartilage in the knee.

Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Pain and Limited Range of Motion: The inability to fully bend your knee and the presence of severe pain upon touching the affected area are key indicators of a possible injury. This could suggest damage to the ligaments, such as the medial collateral ligament (MCL), which is located on the inner side of the knee and is commonly injured during collisions.

2. No Visible Swelling: While swelling is a common response to injury, its absence does not rule out significant damage. Some injuries, especially those involving ligaments, may not present with immediate swelling but can still cause pain and functional limitations.

3. Potential Ligament Injury: Given that you mentioned the possibility of a ligament tear, it is essential to consider that injuries to the MCL or even the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) can occur during such impacts. These injuries can lead to instability in the knee, making it difficult to bear weight or perform certain movements.

Recommended Treatment Steps
1. Immediate Care: Initially, you should follow the R.I.C.E. method:
- Rest: Avoid putting weight on the injured knee.

- Ice: Apply ice packs to the area for 15-20 minutes every hour to reduce pain and inflammation.

- Compression: Use an elastic bandage or knee brace to provide support and minimize swelling.

- Elevation: Keep your knee elevated above the level of your heart to help reduce swelling.

2. Seek Medical Evaluation: It is crucial to see a healthcare professional, preferably an orthopedic specialist, for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a physical examination and order imaging studies, such as an MRI, to assess the extent of the injury. This will help determine whether there is a ligament tear, cartilage damage, or other issues.

3. Physical Therapy: If the injury is confirmed to be a sprain or strain, physical therapy may be recommended. A physical therapist can guide you through exercises to strengthen the muscles around the knee and improve flexibility, which is vital for recovery.

4. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can help manage pain. However, if you have allergies to NSAIDs, consult your doctor for alternatives.

5. Surgical Intervention: In cases where there is a complete tear of a ligament or significant structural damage, surgery may be necessary. This is typically considered if conservative treatments do not lead to improvement or if the knee remains unstable.

6. Gradual Return to Activity: Once you start feeling better and regain strength and range of motion, you can gradually return to your normal activities. However, it’s essential to listen to your body and avoid pushing through pain.

Conclusion
In summary, your symptoms suggest a possible ligament injury, and it is essential to seek medical attention for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Early intervention can significantly impact your recovery and help prevent long-term complications. Remember to take care of your knee, and don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for guidance.
