Postoperative care for breast fibroadenoma?
Hello: I had fibroid surgery on April 29.
The next day, I went back to change the dressing.
The doctor didn't mention any follow-up appointments; he only said to keep the gauze as dry as possible and to change it myself if it gets wet, and not to touch the cosmetic adhesive.
How long is the cosmetic adhesive typically left on? Can I apply a waterproof bandage over the gauze? I'm concerned about getting it wet while showering! Are there any other special precautions I should take for the surgical wound post-operation? Thank you!

Dr. Li Zhonghuai reply Surgery
Hello! Wounds should never come into contact with tap water for at least 10 days.
Waterproof dressings are more convenient, but they must be changed after showering.
If the adhesive bandage gets wet, clean it with saline solution and apply a new adhesive bandage.
Once the wound has completely healed, the function of the adhesive bandage is to reduce tension, which helps make the scar less noticeable.
You can keep it on for as long as possible; if you care about your appearance, it is recommended to wear it for six months.

More Info
Post-surgery care for breast fibroadenoma is crucial for ensuring proper healing and minimizing complications. After undergoing surgery for fibroadenoma, patients often have several concerns regarding wound care, follow-up appointments, and overall recovery. Here are some key tips and guidelines to consider:
Wound Care
1. Keep the Wound Dry: It is essential to keep the surgical site dry for at least 10 days post-operation. This helps prevent infection and promotes healing. If the dressing becomes wet, it should be changed immediately. You can use waterproof dressings to cover the area while showering, but make sure to replace them afterward.
2. Avoid Direct Water Exposure: As mentioned, the wound should not come into contact with water. This includes avoiding baths, swimming, or soaking in hot tubs until the doctor gives the green light.
3. Use of Adhesive Strips (Beauty Tape): The beauty tape or adhesive strips are typically used to reduce tension on the scar and promote better healing. They can be left on for as long as they remain intact and dry. For optimal results, it is often recommended to keep them on for several weeks to months, depending on the surgeon's advice. If they become wet, clean the area gently with saline solution and apply a new strip.
4. Monitoring for Complications: Keep an eye on the surgical site for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Pain Management
Post-operative pain is common and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers, as advised by your doctor. If pain persists or worsens, it is important to consult your healthcare provider.
Activity Restrictions
1. Limit Physical Activity: Avoid strenuous activities or heavy lifting for at least a few weeks post-surgery. Gentle movements are encouraged to promote circulation, but be cautious not to strain the surgical area.
2. Gradual Return to Normal Activities: As you start to feel better, you can gradually return to your normal activities. Listen to your body and avoid any movements that cause discomfort.
Follow-Up Care
1. Follow-Up Appointments: While your doctor may not have scheduled a follow-up appointment, it is advisable to have one to ensure proper healing and to address any concerns you may have. Regular check-ups can help monitor the surgical site and assess the healing process.
2. Self-Examination: After your recovery, perform regular self-examinations of your breasts to monitor for any changes. Report any unusual findings to your healthcare provider.
Nutrition and Healing
A balanced diet rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals can aid in the healing process. Foods high in vitamin C, zinc, and protein can support tissue repair. Staying hydrated is also essential for overall recovery.
Conclusion
In summary, post-surgery care for breast fibroadenoma involves keeping the wound dry, monitoring for signs of infection, managing pain, and gradually returning to normal activities. If you have any concerns or questions about your recovery, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice. Remember, every individual's recovery process is unique, and following your doctor's recommendations is key to a successful recovery.
