Missed menstruation?
Hello, I would like to ask if it is normal for my period to be 27 days late? This has happened before when my period suddenly stopped for a month, but it returned to normal the following month.
This time, it has been a bit longer.
I am currently studying for university and only getting about 5 hours of sleep a night.
My second question is whether being overweight can cause my period to be absent?
Hmm..., 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/05/08
Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the factors that can affect the menstrual cycle are numerous, including environment, lifestyle, stress, emotional instability, diet, age, lesions in the uterus or cervix, pregnancy, and more.
It is advisable to consult a gynecologist to determine whether it is due to hormonal imbalance or other reasons.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

Missed periods can be a source of concern for many individuals, and understanding the underlying factors is crucial for managing reproductive health. In your case, a missed period for 27 days, especially if it has happened before, can be attributed to several factors, including stress, lifestyle changes, and weight fluctuations.
Firstly, it’s important to note that menstrual cycles can vary significantly among individuals. A typical cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days, and variations can occur due to numerous reasons. Stress is a common factor that can disrupt hormonal balance, leading to irregularities in the menstrual cycle. As you mentioned, you are currently preparing for university and are experiencing sleep deprivation, which can further exacerbate stress levels. Lack of sleep can affect the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that regulates hormones, potentially leading to missed periods.
Regarding your second question about weight and its impact on menstruation, being overweight can indeed influence your menstrual cycle. Excess body fat can lead to hormonal imbalances, particularly with estrogen levels. High levels of estrogen can disrupt the normal ovulatory process, leading to irregular or missed periods. This is often seen in conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), where weight gain and hormonal imbalances are common.
If you are experiencing significant weight gain or have a BMI that categorizes you as overweight or obese, it may be beneficial to consider a balanced diet and regular exercise. Losing weight can help restore hormonal balance and may lead to more regular menstrual cycles. However, it’s essential to approach weight loss in a healthy manner, focusing on sustainable lifestyle changes rather than extreme diets.
In your situation, it would be advisable to monitor your menstrual cycle over the next few months. If your period does not return or if you experience other symptoms such as severe pain, excessive bleeding, or significant changes in your health, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend blood tests to check hormone levels, a pelvic ultrasound to assess your reproductive organs, or other evaluations to rule out conditions like PCOS or thyroid disorders.
In summary, missed periods can be influenced by stress, lifestyle factors, and weight. It’s essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle, manage stress, and seek medical advice if irregularities persist. Regular check-ups can help ensure that any underlying issues are addressed promptly, allowing you to maintain both your reproductive health and overall well-being.
