Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/05/20
Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the patient must return for a follow-up appointment within one week after the miscarriage procedure.
Clinical examinations and ultrasound scans are necessary to confirm whether the embryo has been completely expelled and to assess recovery.
It is recommended to have the operating physician evaluate the situation.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

After an abortion, it is not uncommon to experience some abdominal distension, discomfort, and even mild pain. These symptoms can be attributed to several factors related to the procedure and the body's healing process.
Firstly, the surgical procedure itself can lead to temporary changes in the abdominal cavity. The uterus undergoes significant changes during and after an abortion, and the surrounding tissues may also be affected. This can result in feelings of fullness or pressure in the abdomen. Additionally, the body may produce gas as part of the healing process, which can contribute to a sensation of bloating or distension.
It is also important to consider that after an abortion, the hormonal changes that occur can affect the gastrointestinal system. Hormones such as progesterone can slow down digestion, leading to bloating and discomfort. Furthermore, if there was any manipulation of the uterus or surrounding organs during the procedure, this could also lead to temporary discomfort.
Regarding the slight bleeding you mentioned, it is common to experience some vaginal bleeding after an abortion, especially in the first few weeks. This bleeding can vary in amount and duration, and it is typically a sign that the body is expelling the remaining tissue and returning to its normal state. However, if the bleeding is heavy (soaking through a pad in an hour or less), or if you experience severe pain, fever, or any other concerning symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention immediately.
Pain in the abdomen can also be a normal part of the recovery process, especially if the procedure was surgical. However, if the pain is persistent, worsening, or accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, chills, or foul-smelling discharge, it could indicate a complication such as an infection or retained tissue. In such cases, it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation.
In summary, while some abdominal distension, discomfort, and light bleeding can be normal after an abortion, it is vital to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have any concerns about the severity of your symptoms or if they do not improve over time, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further assessment and guidance. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and ensure that you are recovering appropriately.
