Adverse drug effects, medication issues?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask about the insomnia medication I received at the clinic.
The medication I take in the morning is combined with my hypertension medication.
In February, I switched to this capsule, "Eliquis" (Baclofen) 0.5 mg, and for the medication I take before bed, I switched to "Keppra" (Levetiracetam) 0.5 mg in February.
Yesterday, I switched to "Eliquis" (Baclofen) 0.25 mg, along with calcium carbonate 500 mg, and a self-paid supplement called "Synbiont."
I told the doctor during my follow-up visit that my stress has not increased recently and requested a lighter insomnia medication.
I honestly informed the doctor that I rarely take the morning medication, "Eliquis" (Baclofen) 0.25 mg.
He emphasized that this medication is meant to protect my stomach and intestines and insisted that I must take it.
However, I found online that this medication may not serve that purpose.

Could you please explain the function of this medication? Additionally, the doctor has prescribed "Eliquis" (Baclofen) 0.25 mg to me frequently.
For the past two years, I have taken it regularly, but it has caused me blurred vision, memory loss, and muscle twitching sensations.
Therefore, I am hesitant to take it now.
During my follow-up visit yesterday, I honestly told the doctor about these symptoms, but he insisted that they are not related to the medication he prescribed.

Dr. Zhong Mingxun reply Psychiatry

Yuli Shupan tablets 0.25 mg are anxiolytic medications.
Many individuals with anxiety may experience gastrointestinal motility issues and decreased gastric mucosal secretion.
Therefore, in many highly anxious individuals who also have gastrointestinal discomfort, this medication is often used.
The side effects of the medication are possible, and a small number of sensitive individuals may experience them more prominently.
However, the primary goal of the medication is to achieve a balance between efficacy and side effects.

When it comes to managing psychiatric medications, understanding their side effects and how they interact with your overall health is crucial. Your concerns about the medication "生達癒利舒盼錠" (likely referring to a form of the medication known as "Esomeprazole" or similar) and its side effects are valid, especially considering your history of experiencing symptoms like blurred vision, memory loss, and muscle twitching.

Firstly, it’s important to clarify the purpose of the medication you mentioned. "生達癒利舒盼錠" is typically used as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that helps reduce stomach acid, which can be beneficial for individuals who experience gastrointestinal issues, especially if they are taking medications that can irritate the stomach lining. However, it is not primarily an antidepressant or a medication for insomnia. Your doctor may have prescribed it to protect your stomach from potential irritation caused by other medications you are taking, particularly if you are on NSAIDs or other drugs that can lead to gastric discomfort.

Regarding the side effects you have experienced, such as blurred vision and memory issues, it is essential to communicate these concerns with your healthcare provider. While some side effects can be attributed to the medications themselves, others may stem from the underlying conditions being treated or even from the stress and anxiety you are experiencing. It’s not uncommon for psychiatric medications to cause side effects that can mimic or exacerbate symptoms of anxiety and depression.

If you feel that the medication is not working for you or is causing more harm than good, it is crucial to have an open dialogue with your doctor. You mentioned that your doctor insists on you taking the medication for gastrointestinal protection, but if you are experiencing adverse effects, it’s important to discuss alternative options. There may be other medications or strategies that can provide the same protective benefits without the unwanted side effects.

Moreover, the interaction between your psychiatric medications and other treatments, such as those for high blood pressure, can also lead to compounded side effects. For instance, some medications can cause sedation or cognitive impairment, which may be exacerbated when combined with others. Always ensure that your healthcare providers are aware of all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, to avoid any potential interactions.

In conclusion, while it is important to adhere to your prescribed treatment plan, your comfort and quality of life should be prioritized. If you are experiencing significant side effects, do not hesitate to seek a second opinion or ask for a referral to a specialist who can help you navigate your treatment options. Remember, managing mental health is a collaborative process, and your input is vital in finding the right balance of medications that work for you without compromising your overall well-being.
