Side Effects of Psychiatric Medications: A Patient's Concerns - Psychiatry

Drug side effects

Hello, doctor.
I have been taking a medication called Uruan for a while now.
In the first two days of taking it, I heard a 2-second piece of music, but I'm not sure if it was a mistake from my phone.
Yesterday afternoon, I seemed to hear my mother calling me while I was lying in bed, but when I went into her room to ask her, she said she hadn't called me.
I also take Lefutide, Otsuka Anri Fuku tablet 7.5mg, and Mu Jing before bed.
I would like to know if long-term use of Uruan can lead to memory problems, and if the situations I described are normal.
I am also preparing for an exam; could it be that I'm under too much stress, or is it no longer suitable for me to prepare for the exam? The doctor said my diagnosis is major depressive disorder, but it could also be latent schizophrenia.

Dr. Qiu Junda reply Psychiatry

Hello.
Youran tablets are anxiolytics.
The side effects you mentioned are generally uncommon.
However, the other three medications you are taking may also have some side effects.
It could also be a reaction to the stress you mentioned.
I recommend learning some simple stress management techniques (there is information available online).
You can discuss and adjust the side effects during your follow-up appointment with your physician.
Thank you.

When it comes to managing psychiatric medications, particularly for conditions like depression and anxiety, understanding the potential side effects and how to communicate effectively with healthcare providers is crucial. Your concerns about the side effects of the medications you are taking, such as "悠然錠" (Yuran), "樂復得" (Luvox), and others, are valid and warrant careful consideration.

Firstly, it’s important to recognize that many psychiatric medications can have side effects that may affect your perception and cognitive functions. The experiences you described, such as hearing music or voices that are not present, could be related to the medications you are taking. These auditory experiences may be a side effect of the medication, especially if they are new symptoms that have arisen since starting the treatment. However, they could also be influenced by stress or anxiety, particularly if you are preparing for exams, which can heighten your sensitivity to such experiences.

Regarding your concern about memory loss, some psychiatric medications, particularly those that affect neurotransmitter levels in the brain, can impact cognitive functions, including memory. Long-term use of certain medications may lead to cognitive side effects, but this varies significantly from person to person. It’s essential to discuss these concerns with your psychiatrist, who can evaluate your symptoms in the context of your overall treatment plan.

In terms of managing your current situation, here are some steps you can take:
1. Open Communication with Your Psychiatrist: It’s crucial to have an open dialogue with your psychiatrist about the side effects you are experiencing. Documenting your symptoms, including when they occur and their severity, can help your doctor make informed decisions about your treatment. If you feel comfortable, share your experiences of hearing music or voices, as well as any concerns about memory loss.

2. Medication Review: Your psychiatrist may consider adjusting your medication regimen. This could involve changing dosages, switching medications, or adding new treatments to mitigate side effects. It’s important not to stop or adjust your medications without professional guidance, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms or exacerbation of your condition.

3. Stress Management Techniques: Since you mentioned preparing for exams, it’s vital to incorporate stress management techniques into your routine. Practices such as mindfulness, meditation, or gentle exercise can help reduce anxiety and improve your overall well-being. Consider discussing these strategies with a therapist or counselor, who can provide additional support.

4. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Engaging in therapy, particularly CBT, can be beneficial in addressing both depressive symptoms and anxiety related to your studies. Therapy can provide you with coping strategies and help you manage stress more effectively.

5. Lifestyle Adjustments: Ensure you are maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular sleep patterns, balanced nutrition, and physical activity. These factors can significantly impact your mental health and may help alleviate some of the side effects of your medications.

6. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep a journal of your symptoms, medication schedule, and any changes you notice. This can be a valuable tool for discussions with your psychiatrist and can help track the effectiveness of any changes made to your treatment plan.

In conclusion, while experiencing unusual auditory perceptions and concerns about memory can be distressing, it’s essential to approach these issues with your healthcare provider. They can help determine whether these experiences are related to your medications, your mental health condition, or external stressors. By maintaining open communication and actively participating in your treatment plan, you can work towards finding a balance that supports your mental health while preparing for your exams. Remember, managing mental health is a collaborative process, and your insights and experiences are vital in shaping your treatment journey.
