Ocular issues: Orbital pain?
Hello Doctor: In May of this year, I started experiencing a sensation of dryness and discomfort in both eyes, along with increased redness.
I visited a general ophthalmology clinic, but there was not much improvement.
Later, I went to Chi Mei Medical Center for an eye examination, where the doctor mentioned that I was spending too much time on my phone and computer.
I have since been trying to reduce this habit, as I am concerned about my eye health.
I also underwent a vision test to check for glaucoma, especially since my father has lost vision in both eyes due to glaucoma.
My tests came back normal.
However, I have recently noticed swelling and pain in the eye sockets, which alternates between my right and left eye.
Occasionally, I also feel a slight headache.
Could you please tell me what might be causing this? Thank you.

Based on your description, it is possible that you are experiencing the onset of presbyopia, which typically begins around the age of 40.
This condition may be accompanied by symptoms such as blurred vision at close distances, eye strain, discomfort around the eyes, or even migraines.

Eye socket pain and discomfort can arise from a variety of causes, and understanding these can help in managing and alleviating symptoms. Based on your description, it seems that your symptoms began with eye strain, which is common among individuals who spend extended periods looking at screens or engaging in close-up work. This can lead to a condition known as digital eye strain or computer vision syndrome, characterized by symptoms such as dryness, irritation, and discomfort in the eyes.
The eye socket pain you are experiencing could be attributed to several factors. One common cause is the fatigue of the ciliary muscles, which are responsible for adjusting the lens of the eye for focusing. Prolonged screen time can lead to overuse of these muscles, resulting in discomfort not only in the eyes but also in the surrounding areas, including the eye sockets. Additionally, the strain can lead to tension headaches, which may explain the slight pain you feel in your head.
Another potential cause of your symptoms could be sinus-related issues. The sinuses are located near the eye sockets, and inflammation or infection in the sinus cavities can lead to referred pain in the eye area. This is particularly relevant if you have experienced any nasal congestion or sinus pressure.
Moreover, if you have a history of eye issues, such as your father's glaucoma, it is wise to remain vigilant about your eye health. While your recent eye examinations have shown no signs of glaucoma, it is essential to continue regular check-ups, especially if you notice any changes in your vision or discomfort.
To address your current symptoms, consider the following recommendations:
1. Take Regular Breaks: Implement the 20-20-20 rule—every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps reduce eye strain and allows the ciliary muscles to relax.
2. Proper Lighting: Ensure that your workspace is well-lit to reduce glare on screens, which can exacerbate eye strain.
3. Use Artificial Tears: If you experience dryness, lubricating eye drops can help alleviate discomfort. However, if you find that certain drops cause more irritation, consult with your eye care provider for alternatives.
4. Warm Compresses: Applying a warm compress over your eyes can help soothe discomfort and promote relaxation of the eye muscles.
5. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help maintain moisture levels in your eyes and overall health.
6. Consult an Eye Specialist: Since your symptoms have persisted despite making lifestyle changes, it may be beneficial to revisit an eye specialist. They can perform a thorough examination to rule out any underlying conditions that may be contributing to your discomfort.
7. Consider Vision Therapy: If your eye strain is significant, vision therapy may be recommended. This is a program of eye exercises designed to improve visual skills and alleviate discomfort.
In conclusion, while your symptoms may initially seem related to eye strain from screen time, it is crucial to consider other factors such as sinus issues or underlying eye conditions. Regular eye examinations and proactive management of your screen time and eye care can significantly improve your comfort and overall eye health. If symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to seek further medical advice.
