Issues After Circumcision

It has been a month and a half since my circumcision, and the foreskin and frenulum are still swollen.
The swelling is most severe when I wake up in the morning, and it appears to be a ring of swelling (like a donut).
I found some advice online suggesting warm compresses, but after applying them, the swelling seems to increase.
There are small bumps at the suture sites that look like tiny blisters, and I experience some stinging after warm compresses.
This also happens after showering.
Should I continue using warm compresses? Additionally, how long is this swelling expected to last? It has been nearly three weeks, and there are no signs of the swelling subsiding.
Thank you.

Hello Mr.
Montan: Post-circumcision edema may sometimes persist for a month, depending on individual constitution.
The edema does not affect function and can be monitored without the need for special hot compresses.

Post-circumcision complications can be concerning, especially when it comes to swelling and recovery. It’s important to understand that some degree of swelling is normal after a circumcision, but persistent or worsening swelling may indicate complications that need to be addressed.

Firstly, it's essential to recognize that after circumcision, the area undergoes a healing process that can involve inflammation. Swelling, or edema, is a common response to surgical trauma, and it can be exacerbated by factors such as activity level, hygiene practices, and even the type of stitches used. In your case, the persistent swelling around the glans and the frenulum area, resembling a "ring" or "swimming ring," suggests that the healing process may not be progressing as expected.

The appearance of small bumps at the suture site, which resemble blisters, can also be a normal part of healing. These bumps may be fluid-filled and can occur due to the body's inflammatory response. However, if they are painful or increasing in size, it may warrant further evaluation.

Regarding your question about heat therapy, while some individuals find relief from swelling with warm compresses, it can sometimes lead to increased swelling if applied excessively or if the area is already inflamed. If you notice that heat exacerbates your swelling or causes discomfort, it may be better to switch to cold compresses instead. Cold therapy can help reduce inflammation and numb the area, providing relief from pain and swelling.

As for the duration of swelling, it varies significantly from person to person. Generally, swelling should start to decrease within a few days to a couple of weeks post-surgery. If you are nearing three weeks with no signs of improvement, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They can assess for any potential complications such as infection, excessive scarring, or issues related to the sutures.

In summary, while some swelling is normal after circumcision, persistent or worsening symptoms should not be ignored. It’s crucial to monitor the area for signs of infection (such as increased redness, warmth, or discharge) and to communicate any concerns with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further interventions, such as adjusting your post-operative care routine or, in some cases, additional treatments to facilitate healing. Always prioritize your health and well-being by seeking professional advice when in doubt.
