Greenish semen

Previously, everything was normal, but at some point, I noticed a slight greenish tint.
I consulted a doctor who said it was fine as long as there was no blood.
I was prescribed medication, but the issue persists.
Could this be related to urinating immediately after masturbation? I used to do that, but now I don't, and there's still a slight greenish tint.

Dr. Fu Shizhang reply Urology

It is recommended to conduct a semen analysis to assess whether it is normal.

Green semen can be a concerning symptom for many individuals, and understanding its potential causes is essential for determining whether medical advice is necessary. Semen typically appears white or off-white, and any significant change in color can lead to questions about underlying health issues.
One of the most common reasons for a greenish tint in semen is the presence of an infection. This could be a sexually transmitted infection (STI) such as gonorrhea or chlamydia, which can cause inflammation and lead to changes in the color and consistency of semen. Other infections, such as prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland), can also result in discolored semen. In these cases, the green color may be due to the presence of pus or other inflammatory cells.

Another possible cause of green semen could be related to dietary factors or supplements. Certain foods, particularly those high in chlorophyll (like leafy greens), or supplements can alter the color of bodily fluids. However, this is generally less common and usually not a cause for concern unless accompanied by other symptoms.

If you have noticed a persistent change in the color of your semen, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain during ejaculation, discomfort in the pelvic area, or unusual odors, it is crucial to seek medical advice. While your doctor may have reassured you that the absence of blood is a good sign, persistent changes in semen color warrant further investigation.
In your case, you mentioned that you have experienced this change after engaging in masturbation and then urinating. While this practice itself is not typically linked to changes in semen color, it is important to consider that frequent ejaculation can sometimes lead to temporary changes in the appearance of semen. However, if the green tint persists despite changes in your habits, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.

In summary, green semen can be caused by infections, dietary factors, or other health issues. If the discoloration persists or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it is essential to seek medical advice to rule out any underlying conditions. Regular check-ups and open communication with your healthcare provider can help ensure that any potential health issues are addressed promptly.
