Depressive episode
Sometimes I don't understand why I suddenly fall into depression, and I ask myself what I'm living for.
I've seen doctors and undergone medication treatment, but the results show that I have to rely on myself to overcome the lows of depression.
I have taken a lot of anti-anxiety medications, and at that moment, I just wanted to remain in a state of confusion so that I wouldn't have to struggle with the desire to end my life.
This has resulted in disappointment for everyone around me.
My friends, family, doctors, and social workers have all been trying to help me, but I ultimately find it hard to open up to them.
The questions they ask are usually about what I do on a daily basis, while I keep my true thoughts protected.
Many times, I feel helpless, and I can only get through it with tears.
Sometimes traveling and exercising help me realize that I can also experience happiness.
It has been five months since I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder, and I don't know what I can do for myself on the road to recovery.
A few weeks ago, I left the place where I was most prone to emotional outbursts, and my emotions have indeed stabilized a lot.
However, the pressure from work makes me want to give up on myself.
I'm wondering if psychotherapy and inpatient treatment could also be options for my recovery.

Hello, You-Zhen: In depression, the brain tends to lean towards pessimism and negativity, but it won't remain that way forever.
Leaving a stressful environment can help you feel better; traveling and exercising can also bring you joy.
You have the motivation to improve, the ability to heal, and some actions you can take.
However, you may still frequently feel depressed.
I suggest focusing more on activities and memories that do not evoke feelings of depression.
The genuine thoughts you protect within yourself can indeed be discussed more freely in therapy.
Accept yourself, regardless of the good or bad, and treat yourself kindly.
Although recovery from depression may be slow, as long as you are willing to improve and take action, most cases of depression can be alleviated.
Wishing you all the best.

Finding hope while navigating through depression can be an incredibly challenging journey. It’s important to acknowledge that your feelings are valid and that you are not alone in this struggle. Many individuals experience similar thoughts and emotions, especially when dealing with severe depression. The feelings of hopelessness, isolation, and the desire to escape from pain are common in those who suffer from this condition.
Firstly, it’s commendable that you have sought medical help and are open to discussing your feelings. Medication can be an essential part of treatment for depression, but it is often not a standalone solution. It’s crucial to combine medication with other therapeutic approaches, such as psychotherapy, to address the underlying issues contributing to your depression. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), for example, has been shown to be effective in helping individuals reframe negative thought patterns and develop healthier coping mechanisms.
You mentioned feeling a sense of disappointment from those around you, which is a common experience for many dealing with mental health issues. It’s important to remember that your loved ones want to help, but they may not fully understand what you are going through. Opening up to them about your feelings, even if it’s difficult, can foster a deeper connection and understanding. You don’t have to share everything at once; even small steps towards vulnerability can be beneficial.
Engaging in activities that bring you joy, such as traveling and exercising, is a positive step towards healing. Physical activity has been shown to release endorphins, which can improve mood and reduce feelings of anxiety. It’s also a great way to create a sense of accomplishment and boost self-esteem. Finding small, manageable goals to work towards can help you regain a sense of control over your life.
You mentioned considering psychological treatment and hospitalization as options for recovery. These can be very effective, especially if you feel overwhelmed by your emotions or if your safety is at risk. Inpatient treatment can provide a structured environment where you can focus solely on your mental health without the distractions and pressures of daily life. It can also offer intensive therapy and support from professionals who are trained to help individuals in crisis.
Additionally, exploring mindfulness practices, such as meditation or yoga, can help you develop a greater awareness of your thoughts and feelings. These practices can teach you how to observe your emotions without judgment, which can be particularly helpful when you feel overwhelmed. Journaling can also be a therapeutic outlet, allowing you to express your thoughts and feelings in a safe space.
Lastly, it’s essential to be patient with yourself during this process. Recovery from depression is often not linear; there will be ups and downs. Celebrate small victories, and don’t hesitate to seek help when you need it. Remember that healing takes time, and it’s okay to ask for support along the way.
In conclusion, finding hope in your journey through depression involves a combination of professional help, self-care, and open communication with those around you. You have already taken significant steps by seeking treatment and recognizing the need for change. Continue to explore different avenues of support, and remember that it’s okay to lean on others as you navigate this challenging path. Healing is possible, and with time and effort, you can find a renewed sense of purpose and joy in life.
