There are white bumps around the anal area?

A few days ago, I had hard stools which caused anal fissures and bleeding.
I applied hemorrhoid ointment after using the bathroom, but over the past few days, I’ve noticed a rough texture when touching the area while showering.
I just checked and found a sensation of redness and swelling similar to an allergic reaction, along with some white-headed bumps.
How should I handle this? Is it okay to take a picture to show my doctor?

White bumps around the anus can be concerning, especially following an incident like a hard bowel movement that leads to anal fissures. The symptoms you describe, including roughness, redness, and the appearance of white bumps, could be indicative of several conditions, including hemorrhoids, skin irritation, or even an infection.

Firstly, it's important to understand that the anal area is sensitive and can react to various irritants, including hard stools, topical medications, and even hygiene products. The white bumps you are observing could be a result of several factors:
1. Hemorrhoids: Swollen blood vessels in the rectal area can sometimes appear as bumps. They can be internal or external and may become inflamed or thrombosed, leading to discomfort and visible changes in the skin.

2. Skin Irritation: The use of hemorrhoid ointments can sometimes cause irritation or allergic reactions, especially if they contain ingredients that your skin may not tolerate well. This could lead to a rash or bumps that resemble acne.

3. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, which can occur in the anal area and present as small, white, pus-filled bumps. It can be caused by friction, irritation, or infection.

4. Infections: Conditions such as herpes or other sexually transmitted infections can also present with bumps or lesions around the anal area.
Given your symptoms, here are some steps you can take:
- Maintain Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry. Use mild soap and water, and avoid harsh chemicals or fragrances that could exacerbate irritation.

- Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that the hemorrhoid ointment or any other topical product is causing irritation, consider discontinuing its use and consult with a healthcare provider for alternatives.

- Warm Baths: Soaking in a warm bath can help soothe the area and promote healing. This is often referred to as a sitz bath and can be very beneficial for anal fissures and hemorrhoids.

- Over-the-Counter Treatments: You may consider using over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream to reduce inflammation, but it’s best to consult with a healthcare provider before applying any new treatments.

- Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the bumps persist, worsen, or are accompanied by significant pain, bleeding, or other concerning symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination and may recommend further tests or treatments based on their findings.

Regarding your question about sending a photo to your doctor, this can be a helpful way to provide visual context for your symptoms. Many healthcare providers are open to receiving images for preliminary assessments, but it’s best to check with their office policies first.

In summary, while white bumps around the anus can be caused by various conditions, proper hygiene, avoiding irritants, and consulting with a healthcare provider are essential steps in managing your symptoms. If you experience any worsening of your condition or new symptoms, do not hesitate to seek medical advice promptly.
