How to stop growing taller?
Hello Doctor, my daughter is going to be in the second year of junior high school this year (not yet 14 years old).
She is already 172 cm tall and weighs only 47 kg.
Her bone age matches her actual age, blood tests are normal, and she hasn't started menstruating yet.
Aside from having an allergic constitution, everything else is normal.
Her mother is 169 cm tall and her father is 175 cm.
She grew from 162 cm at elementary school graduation to 172 cm during the summer after her first year of junior high, which is a total of 10 cm in just one year.
It’s really alarming… I’m very worried.
Doctor, is there any way to prevent my daughter from growing taller? Thank you so much – a super worried mom.

More Info
Managing rapid growth in preteens can be a significant concern for parents, especially when it seems to be happening at an accelerated pace. Your daughter, at 172 cm and only 14 years old, is indeed taller than average for her age, and it’s understandable that you might feel anxious about her growth trajectory. However, it’s essential to approach this situation with a balanced perspective, focusing on health rather than solely on height.
Understanding Growth Patterns
First, it’s important to recognize that growth patterns in children can vary widely. Genetics plays a crucial role, and since both you and your husband are relatively tall, it’s not surprising that your daughter is following suit. The growth spurts that occur during puberty can lead to significant height increases in a short period, particularly in girls, who typically experience their growth spurts earlier than boys.
Nutrition and Lifestyle
While you may be concerned about her height, it’s vital to ensure that her nutritional needs are being met. A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is crucial for healthy growth. This includes:
1. Calcium and Vitamin D: These are vital for bone health. Encourage her to consume dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified foods.
2. Protein: Important for overall growth and development. Include lean meats, fish, eggs, beans, and nuts in her diet.
3. Fruits and Vegetables: These provide necessary vitamins and minerals that support overall health.
4. Hydration: Ensure she drinks plenty of water, especially if she is active.
Exercise and Physical Activity
Physical activity is also essential. While you mentioned concerns about her height, regular exercise can help maintain a healthy weight and promote overall well-being. Encourage her to engage in activities she enjoys, whether it’s swimming, dancing, or even yoga. These activities can help strengthen her muscles and bones without putting undue stress on her growing body.
Monitoring Growth
Since her growth has been rapid, it might be beneficial to keep track of her height and weight regularly. If you notice any sudden changes or if her growth rate continues to be concerning, consulting with a pediatrician or an endocrinologist can provide additional insights. They can assess her growth plates through X-rays to determine how much growth potential she has left.
Addressing Concerns About Height
If you are looking for ways to manage her growth, it’s crucial to understand that there are no medically approved methods to intentionally slow down growth in healthy children. Interventions to limit growth are generally not recommended unless there are underlying health concerns. Instead, focus on fostering a positive body image and encouraging her to embrace her height.
Emotional Support
Lastly, emotional support is vital. Rapid growth can sometimes lead to feelings of self-consciousness, especially in social situations. Encourage open communication about her feelings and experiences. Building her confidence and self-esteem will help her navigate any challenges that come with being taller than her peers.
Conclusion
In summary, while it’s natural to be concerned about your daughter’s rapid growth, focusing on her overall health and well-being is the best approach. Ensure she has a balanced diet, engages in regular physical activity, and maintains a healthy lifestyle. If you have ongoing concerns, don’t hesitate to consult with healthcare professionals who can provide personalized advice and support. Remember, every child grows at their own pace, and embracing her unique growth journey is essential for her emotional and physical health.
