The effects of using iodine tincture during pregnancy on the fetus?

Hello, I am currently 25 weeks pregnant and I have a history of axillary bromhidrosis.
Previously, a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner suggested using povidone-iodine to alleviate the condition.
Before pregnancy, I would occasionally apply povidone-iodine before showering (for about 2-3 minutes).
However, during the second trimester, due to an increase in body odor, I started using povidone-iodine on my underarms again (about 1-2 times a week, for 2-3 minutes before showering).
I later discovered that povidone-iodine is classified as a Category D medication, and I am concerned about its potential effects on the fetus.

The use of Povidone-Iodine during pregnancy, particularly in the second trimester, raises valid concerns regarding fetal health. Povidone-Iodine is classified as a Category D medication by the FDA, which indicates that there is evidence of risk to the fetus based on human data, but the potential benefits may warrant its use in certain situations despite the risks.
In your case, using Povidone-Iodine (often referred to as "Betadine") for managing body odor is not a common practice, and it is essential to consider the potential implications of its use during pregnancy. Povidone-Iodine is primarily used as an antiseptic for skin disinfection before surgery and for treating minor wounds. Its active ingredient, iodine, can be absorbed through the skin, and excessive exposure may lead to thyroid dysfunction in both the mother and the fetus.

Research indicates that high levels of iodine can lead to thyroid problems, which can affect fetal development. The thyroid is crucial for regulating metabolism and is especially important during pregnancy as it supports the development of the fetal brain and other organs. If the mother experiences thyroid dysfunction, it can lead to complications such as preterm birth, low birth weight, or developmental issues in the child.

Given that you are using Povidone-Iodine 1-2 times a week for a few minutes, the risk may be relatively low, but it is still advisable to minimize exposure to any Category D medications during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. The skin's absorption rate can vary, and while occasional use may not pose a significant risk, it is essential to be cautious.
It is also important to consider alternative methods for managing body odor that do not involve the use of potentially harmful substances. Natural deodorants, baking soda, or other non-irritating topical agents may be safer options during pregnancy.
If you have concerns about your use of Povidone-Iodine and its potential effects on your pregnancy, it is crucial to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status. Regular monitoring of thyroid function during pregnancy may also be warranted if there are concerns about iodine exposure.

In summary, while occasional use of Povidone-Iodine may not lead to significant risks, it is essential to be cautious and consider safer alternatives. Always consult with your healthcare provider regarding any medications or treatments during pregnancy to ensure the health and safety of both you and your baby.
