Pain during erection after circumcision?
Hello Doctor: I recently had a circumcision and it has been over two weeks.
I just had my stitches removed yesterday, but this morning during an erection, I felt pain in the area above the testicles, between my legs.
I experienced the same pain when I tried to achieve an erection again at noon.
Could this be due to the fact that the circumcision site has not fully healed? Additionally, before the stitches were removed, I thought the pain was due to the tension from the sutures!

Dr. Li Xinyi reply Urology
It has been more than two weeks.
The doctor should remove the stitches only if there are no issues with the wound.
Your situation is less common, but I recommend that if your symptoms persist, you should return for a follow-up appointment with the surgeon to confirm everything is alright.
They will be able to determine if there are any other problems.

Post-circumcision pain during erections can be a common concern for many individuals who have recently undergone the procedure. It is important to understand that the healing process after circumcision can vary significantly from person to person, and discomfort during erections can be attributed to several factors.
Firstly, after circumcision, the area around the glans (the head of the penis) and the shaft may be sensitive as the skin heals. The pain you are experiencing, particularly in the area above the testicles and between the legs, could be due to the healing tissues being stretched during an erection. This is especially true if the circumcision was recent, as the skin and underlying tissues may still be inflamed or tender.
The fact that you experienced pain during erections both in the morning and later in the day suggests that the area is still sensitive. It is not uncommon for individuals to feel discomfort as the nerves and tissues in the area adjust post-surgery. The pain you initially attributed to the stitches may indeed be a continuation of the healing process, as the body responds to the changes made during the circumcision.
Here are some key points to consider regarding your situation:
1. Healing Time: Generally, the healing process after circumcision can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. It is crucial to allow adequate time for the tissues to heal properly. Two weeks post-surgery is still relatively early in the healing process.
2. Pain Management: If the pain is mild and manageable, it may be best to continue monitoring the situation. Over-the-counter pain relief medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help alleviate discomfort. However, if the pain becomes severe or persistent, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider.
3. Signs of Infection: Keep an eye out for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge from the surgical site. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly.
4. Follow-Up Care: Since you have recently had your stitches removed, it is important to follow any post-operative care instructions provided by your surgeon. This may include recommendations for gentle cleaning, avoiding certain activities, and monitoring for any complications.
5. Erections and Sensitivity: As you continue to heal, you may find that the sensitivity of the area decreases over time. If the pain persists or worsens, it may be beneficial to discuss this with your healthcare provider, who can assess whether there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed.
6. Sexual Activity: It is generally recommended to avoid sexual activity until you have fully healed and received clearance from your healthcare provider. Engaging in sexual activity too soon can exacerbate discomfort and potentially lead to complications.
In conclusion, while it is not uncommon to experience pain during erections after circumcision, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and allow time for healing. If you have any concerns or if the pain continues, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and ensure that your recovery progresses smoothly.
