Height issues
Hello Doctor: On September 10, 2016, I had an X-ray taken by an orthopedic doctor to check if my growth plates had closed.
The X-ray was of my pelvis, and the doctor said they had not closed yet, so there is still a chance for me to grow a bit more.
I would like to ask when approximately the growth plates will close.
My current height is about 170 cm, and I have been taking some height-increasing medications.
I just started taking a supplement called "Zhu Da Han" last week.
Thank you.
A-Guan, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/10/05
Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics
Whether one will grow taller depends on the growth plates near the knee joints.
By the age of seventeen, it is generally expected that further height increase is unlikely, and there is no need to take any special medications.

Understanding growth plates and their role in height potential is crucial for anyone concerned about their growth. Growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue located near the ends of long bones. They are responsible for the lengthening of bones during childhood and adolescence. The timing of growth plate closure varies among individuals and is influenced by several factors, including genetics, nutrition, and overall health.
In general, growth plates in males tend to close around the ages of 16 to 18, while in females, they typically close a bit earlier, around ages 14 to 16. However, these ages can vary significantly based on individual development. For example, some individuals may experience late growth spurts, especially if they are late bloomers. This means that even if your growth plates are still open, there is a limited window of time during which you can still grow taller.
From your inquiry, it appears that your doctor has indicated that your growth plates are still open, which is a positive sign for your height potential. If you are currently 170 cm and still have open growth plates, you may have the opportunity to grow a few more centimeters, depending on how much longer your growth plates remain active.
Regarding the use of growth supplements, such as "助大漢," it's essential to approach these with caution. While some supplements claim to promote growth, their efficacy is often not scientifically validated. A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients, including proteins, vitamins, and minerals, is crucial for overall health and can support your growth potential. Protein is particularly important as it provides the building blocks for growth and repair of tissues. However, no supplement can replace the benefits of a well-rounded diet and healthy lifestyle.
In addition to nutrition, physical activity plays a vital role in growth. Engaging in regular exercise, particularly activities that promote good posture and flexibility, can be beneficial. While exercises like hanging from a bar (like doing pull-ups) may help improve posture and spinal alignment, they do not directly increase height. However, maintaining a healthy weight and staying active can contribute to overall well-being, which is essential during your growth years.
Sleep is another critical factor in growth. Growth hormone, which is vital for growth and development, is primarily released during deep sleep. Ensuring you get adequate rest each night is crucial for maximizing your growth potential. Aim for 8-10 hours of quality sleep per night, especially during your teenage years when growth is most active.
In summary, while you may still have some potential for growth given that your growth plates are open, it is essential to focus on a holistic approach that includes proper nutrition, regular physical activity, and adequate sleep. If you have concerns about your growth or the use of supplements, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation. Remember, genetics plays a significant role in determining your final height, and while you can optimize your growth potential, it is essential to have realistic expectations.
