Intermittent chest pain?

I have been experiencing intermittent chest pain since puberty.
At that time, I thought it was growing pains, but given my current age, it seems unlikely that growing pains would still occur.
However, I still experience episodes occasionally, where I feel pain in my chest but do not have difficulty breathing.
What could be the possible issues according to the doctor?

Dr. He Dongjin reply Cardiology

Hello, muscle nerve pain, gastroesophageal reflux, or mitral valve prolapse could all be possible causes.
If you continue to feel unwell, it is advisable to undergo further examination.

Intermittent chest pain can be a concerning symptom, and understanding its potential causes is crucial for appropriate management. Given your history of experiencing chest pain since adolescence, it’s important to consider a variety of factors that could contribute to your symptoms.
Firstly, it’s essential to differentiate between cardiac and non-cardiac causes of chest pain. Cardiac issues, such as angina or myocardial ischemia, typically present with chest discomfort that may be associated with exertion, stress, or other triggers. However, since you mentioned that your chest pain does not occur with shortness of breath, this may suggest that your symptoms are less likely to be directly related to a significant heart condition.

Non-cardiac causes of chest pain can include musculoskeletal issues, gastrointestinal problems, or even anxiety-related disorders. For instance, costochondritis, an inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum, can cause sharp chest pain that may mimic heart-related issues. Similarly, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can lead to chest discomfort due to acid irritation of the esophagus, often mistaken for heart pain.

Anxiety and stress can also manifest physically, leading to symptoms such as chest pain or tightness. Given that you have experienced these symptoms intermittently since your teenage years, it’s possible that psychological factors could play a role, especially if you are under significant stress or anxiety, such as during exam periods.

To further evaluate your symptoms, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare provider who can perform a thorough assessment. This may include a physical examination, a detailed medical history, and potentially diagnostic tests such as an electrocardiogram (EKG) or echocardiogram to rule out any underlying cardiac issues. If your healthcare provider suspects a non-cardiac cause, they may recommend additional tests, such as imaging studies or gastrointestinal evaluations.

In the meantime, consider keeping a symptom diary to track when the chest pain occurs, its duration, intensity, and any associated activities or stressors. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in determining the underlying cause of your symptoms.

In summary, while intermittent chest pain can be alarming, it is not always indicative of a serious heart condition, especially in younger individuals without significant risk factors. However, it is essential to seek medical advice to ensure a comprehensive evaluation and appropriate management. Remember, early intervention and understanding your body’s signals are key to maintaining your health and well-being.
