Cholesteatoma, red and inflamed?
Doctor, I recently noticed a row of pearly penile papules on one side of the glans, with two particularly large and red ones.
After eating spicy hot pot one day, they became especially red and swollen, but the swelling subsided after two days.
Currently, they only become particularly red when I wear tight pants.
Can pearly penile papules also become inflamed and swollen? Thank you, doctor.

Hello: I'm not sure who provided you with that diagnosis.
It's difficult for the average person to distinguish between pearly penile papules and other skin conditions.
Furthermore, any swollen skin lesions can be caused by consuming irritating foods, excessive friction, or lack of breathability, which may lead to localized redness, swelling, and pain.
I recommend visiting a urology or dermatology clinic for diagnosis and treatment.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Pearly penile papules (PPP) are small, benign growths that typically appear around the corona of the glans penis. They are a normal anatomical variant and are not considered a sexually transmitted infection or a disease. The presence of these papules is common and affects a significant number of men, often presenting as small, dome-shaped, skin-colored or slightly lighter bumps. However, it is important to differentiate between the normal appearance of PPP and any changes that may indicate inflammation or infection.
In your case, the redness and swelling of the larger papules after consuming spicy food, such as hot pot, could be attributed to several factors. Spicy foods can cause vasodilation, which may lead to increased blood flow to the area, resulting in temporary redness and swelling. Additionally, tight clothing can contribute to irritation and friction, which may exacerbate the redness and swelling of the papules.
While PPP itself is not prone to inflammation, it is possible for them to become irritated due to external factors such as friction, heat, or even an allergic reaction to certain materials in clothing or personal care products. If the papules are becoming red and swollen, it may indicate that they are being irritated or inflamed, but this does not mean that they are infected or require treatment unless accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, discharge, or persistent irritation.
To manage the redness and swelling, consider the following recommendations:
1. Avoid Tight Clothing: Opt for loose-fitting underwear and pants to minimize friction and irritation around the genital area.
2. Monitor Dietary Triggers: If you notice that certain foods, like spicy dishes, consistently lead to increased redness or swelling, it may be beneficial to limit their intake.
3. Maintain Hygiene: Keeping the area clean and dry can help prevent irritation. Use mild, unscented soaps and avoid harsh chemicals that may cause allergic reactions.
4. Topical Treatments: If the area becomes particularly irritated, over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream may help reduce inflammation. However, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before applying any topical treatments to ensure they are appropriate for your situation.
5. Consult a Dermatologist: If the redness and swelling persist or worsen, or if you have concerns about the appearance of the papules, it is best to consult a dermatologist. They can provide a thorough examination and determine whether any treatment is necessary.
In conclusion, while pearly penile papules are generally harmless, changes in their appearance can occur due to various factors. Understanding the potential causes of redness and swelling can help you manage the condition effectively. If you have any ongoing concerns or if the symptoms change, seeking professional medical advice is always the best course of action.
