Color changes of the glans after circumcision?
Is it normal for the glans to become pale after having a circumcision? In my case, the color of the glans has become paler, but in recent years, I have noticed the appearance of dark brown pigmentation at the junction of the glans and the shaft, which is gradually expanding.
I would like to know whether the pale area is abnormal or if the dark area is concerning.
Additionally, should I consult a urologist or a dermatologist for abnormal glans coloration? Thank you.

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology
Hello: It is normal for the male genitalia to have variations in color, with some areas being darker and others lighter.
This is especially noticeable after a circumcision, as a portion of the skin has been removed, making the differences more apparent.
If there are any concerns, a urologist should be able to provide answers.
Thank you.

After circumcision, it is not uncommon for individuals to notice changes in the color of the glans (the head of the penis). The glans may appear paler or whiter than it did prior to the procedure. This change can be attributed to several factors, including the removal of the foreskin, which previously protected the glans and kept it moist. Once the foreskin is removed, the glans is exposed to air and friction, which can lead to a change in pigmentation over time.
In your case, the paleness of the glans is generally considered normal after circumcision. However, the development of dark brown pigmentation at the junction of the glans and the shaft of the penis raises some concerns. This could be a result of several factors, including friction, irritation, or even a benign condition such as hyperpigmentation. However, it is essential to differentiate between normal post-surgical changes and potential pathological conditions.
If the dark pigmentation is gradually expanding, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. A urologist or dermatologist would be appropriate specialists to evaluate this condition. Urologists specialize in male reproductive health and urinary tract issues, while dermatologists focus on skin-related concerns. Given that your symptoms involve changes in skin color and texture, a dermatologist may be particularly helpful in assessing the pigmentation changes.
In terms of what to expect during your consultation, the doctor will likely perform a physical examination and may ask about your medical history, including any discomfort, irritation, or other symptoms you may have experienced. They may also inquire about your circumcision procedure, any post-operative complications, and your overall health. Depending on their findings, they may recommend a biopsy or other diagnostic tests to rule out any underlying conditions.
In summary, while the paleness of the glans after circumcision can be normal, the appearance of dark pigmentation that is expanding warrants further investigation. Seeking advice from a urologist or dermatologist will provide you with the best course of action to ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly. Remember, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in your body, especially regarding skin color and texture.
