Elbow ligament surgery
Hello Dr.
Wang,
In October of this year, I unfortunately had a car accident that injured my elbow.
After examination and assessment at the hospital, it was determined that I have a partial tear of the elbow ligaments (the hospital did not have the equipment to visualize the ligaments, and the diagnosis was made based on the angle of elbow flexion and X-ray results).
They recommended surgery, but the doctor mentioned that the hospital does not perform this type of surgery and advised me to seek a larger hospital.
I would like to ask if most ligament surgeries are typically performed on the knee or ankle, or if there are procedures available for elbow ligament surgery? Could you please let me know which hospitals in Taichung offer such surgeries? Thank you for your response, and I wish you all the best.
Luo, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/11/01

Hello: The need for surgery in cases of ligament injuries depends on the stability of the joint and the extent of the ligament tear; not all cases require surgery.
Medical centers in Taichung, such as Veterans General Hospital and the Department of Sports Medicine at China Medical University Hospital, offer such surgeries.
It is recommended to consult a sports medicine specialist to determine if surgery is necessary.
Thank you!

Elbow ligament surgery, particularly for injuries such as ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tears, is a specialized procedure that is less common than surgeries for knee or ankle ligaments. However, it is indeed performed in various hospitals, especially those with orthopedic departments that focus on sports medicine or upper extremity surgery.
In Taichung, several hospitals are well-equipped to handle elbow ligament surgeries. Notable institutions include:
1. Taichung Veterans General Hospital: This hospital has a reputable orthopedic department with specialists experienced in treating elbow injuries, including ligament repairs. They utilize advanced imaging techniques, such as MRI, to assess the extent of the injury accurately.
2. China Medical University Hospital: Known for its comprehensive orthopedic services, this hospital offers a range of surgical options for elbow injuries. Their team includes orthopedic surgeons who specialize in upper extremity surgeries.
3. National Taiwan University Hospital Taichung Branch: This facility is part of the prestigious National Taiwan University system and provides high-quality orthopedic care. They have the necessary resources and expertise to perform elbow ligament surgeries.
4. Feng Chia University Hospital: This hospital also has a competent orthopedic department that can manage elbow ligament injuries and perform the required surgical interventions.
When considering surgery, it is crucial to consult with an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in elbow injuries. They will evaluate your specific condition, including the degree of ligament damage and any associated injuries, to determine the most appropriate surgical approach.
Regarding the types of surgeries available, the most common procedure for UCL injuries is the Tommy John surgery, which involves reconstructing the ligament using a tendon from another part of the body or a donor. This surgery is particularly prevalent among athletes, especially baseball players, due to the high stress placed on the elbow during throwing motions.
In terms of recovery, elbow ligament surgery typically involves a rehabilitation program that focuses on restoring range of motion, strength, and functionality. The recovery timeline can vary depending on the severity of the injury and the specific surgical technique used, but patients can generally expect a rehabilitation period of several months.
It is also essential to discuss the potential risks and complications associated with elbow ligament surgery, such as infection, nerve damage, or stiffness, with your surgeon. They will provide you with a comprehensive overview of what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.
In summary, while elbow ligament surgery is less common than surgeries for other joints, it is certainly available in Taichung. Hospitals like Taichung Veterans General Hospital, China Medical University Hospital, National Taiwan University Hospital Taichung Branch, and Feng Chia University Hospital have the necessary expertise and facilities to perform these surgeries. Consulting with a specialized orthopedic surgeon will help you navigate your options and make an informed decision regarding your treatment.
