Clavicle Healing Concerns: Do I Need to Wear a Sling? - Orthopedics

Clavicle healing issues?

On October 18, I underwent surgery for a right clavicle fracture with self-paid steel pins, and it has been almost a month since then.
At home, I take off the sling while moving around, only wearing it when going out.
I also remove it while sitting and tend to sleep on my left side.
The doctor mentioned that I could occasionally take off the sling while moving during sleep.
However, I wake up with discomfort due to poor sleeping posture, and if I move too much, it feels uncomfortable.
The clavicle feels a bit stiff because of the steel pins, but I don't have much other discomfort.

My questions are: Will removing the sling affect the healing of the bone? Should I wear it while walking or standing? Since my clavicle only has a small fracture, will it heal improperly without the sling? Can I use my right hand for activities as long as it doesn't cause discomfort? Thank you for your response.

The purpose of using a steel pin fixation is to maintain proper alignment of the fracture, as there is a risk of displacement until the bone heals.
Whether or not to use a triangular sling should be discussed with your attending physician, as they are most familiar with your condition.

When it comes to the healing process of a clavicle fracture, especially after surgical intervention such as the insertion of steel pins, it is crucial to follow your physician's recommendations closely. The use of a sling or triangular bandage is typically advised to immobilize the shoulder and clavicle area, which helps in the healing process. However, the specifics can vary based on the nature of the fracture, the surgical technique used, and individual healing rates.

From your description, it seems that you are about a month post-surgery and have been intermittently removing the sling during daily activities at home. While it is understandable to want to feel more comfortable and mobile, it is essential to consider the potential implications of not wearing the sling consistently. The primary purpose of the sling is to limit movement in the shoulder and clavicle area, which can help prevent any unnecessary strain on the healing bone. If you are experiencing discomfort or a feeling of instability when moving your arm, it may be an indication that the area is not fully healed or that you are putting too much stress on it.

Regarding your concerns about whether removing the sling could affect bone healing, it is generally advisable to keep the sling on as much as possible, especially during the early stages of recovery. While your doctor has indicated that you can occasionally remove it, this should ideally be done under specific circumstances and for limited periods. If you are experiencing discomfort or if your sleeping position is causing you pain, it may be beneficial to discuss these issues with your physician. They may recommend adjustments to your sleeping position or additional support to alleviate discomfort while still promoting proper healing.

As for your question about whether the clavicle could heal improperly if the sling is not worn, it is possible. While many clavicle fractures heal well, improper alignment during the healing process can lead to complications such as malunion (where the bone heals in an incorrect position) or nonunion (where the bone fails to heal). These complications can result in long-term issues, including pain, decreased range of motion, and cosmetic deformity.

In terms of activity, it is crucial to listen to your body. If you can perform tasks without discomfort, that is a positive sign; however, it is essential to avoid any heavy lifting or activities that could strain the shoulder. Gradual reintroduction of movement is typically encouraged, but this should be done cautiously and ideally under the guidance of a physical therapist or your physician.

In summary, while it may be tempting to remove the sling for comfort, it is generally advisable to wear it as much as possible during the healing process. If you have concerns about your healing or experience any unusual symptoms, it is best to consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice. They can assess your healing progress and provide recommendations tailored to your specific situation, ensuring that you achieve the best possible outcome from your surgery.
