Lymph nodes (second question)
Hello, doctor.
Last time I inquired about my lymph nodes after taking antibiotics for five days, and they became hard.
I was wondering if I needed to return for a follow-up.
After my follow-up, the doctor only performed a physical examination and prescribed more antibiotics, advising me to continue taking them.
Since I noticed the lymph nodes on November 10th, I have been experiencing persistent abdominal pain, nasal congestion, coughing, headaches, nausea, dry mouth, allergic rashes, a decreased appetite, and extreme fatigue.
I asked the doctor about these symptoms, but he only suggested to keep monitoring the situation.
I'm unsure if I should see an ENT specialist to check for a possible cold or if I should wait until I finish the medication and return to the surgical department.
Is it possible for the lymph nodes to cause the symptoms I mentioned?

Hello.
1.
Regarding your previous inquiry about the lymph nodes becoming hard after taking antibiotics for five days, is it necessary to return for a follow-up? A: If they are not continuing to enlarge, it is indeed acceptable to observe further.
2.
Should you consider seeing an ENT specialist to check if it might be a cold, or should you wait until you finish the medication and then return to the surgery department? A: You can see an ENT specialist for a more specialized evaluation.
3.
Is it possible for the lymph nodes to exhibit the symptoms mentioned above? A: 3.1 The lymph nodes themselves do not exhibit these symptoms; it is likely that a viral or bacterial infection is causing lymphadenopathy and the associated symptoms.
3.2 Within the ENT scope, there is a possibility of tumors spreading to the lymph nodes in the neck, which could combine with 3.1 to cause some symptoms.
It is recommended to have an ENT examination to check for any signs of tumors in the entire ENT area.
If none are found, continue medication and observe.
After the cold symptoms resolve, monitor whether the lymph node will regress; if not, consult a physician for further advice.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

When it comes to understanding lymph nodes and when to seek further medical attention, it’s essential to recognize that lymph nodes play a crucial role in the immune system. They act as filters for harmful substances and are often the first place that the body responds to infections or diseases.
In your case, you’ve been experiencing a range of symptoms including abdominal pain, nasal congestion, cough, headache, nausea, dry mouth, skin rashes, decreased appetite, and extreme fatigue. These symptoms can be indicative of various conditions, including infections, allergies, or even more serious underlying issues. The fact that you have noticed a hard lymph node since mid-November, combined with your other symptoms, warrants a thorough evaluation.
Lymph nodes can become enlarged and firm due to several reasons, including infections (viral or bacterial), inflammatory conditions, or malignancies. The persistence of your symptoms, particularly the systemic ones like fatigue and nausea, suggests that there may be an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. While it’s common for lymph nodes to react to infections, the duration and severity of your symptoms may indicate that further investigation is necessary.
Given that your doctor has prescribed antibiotics and advised you to continue monitoring the lymph node, it’s important to consider a few factors:
1. Duration of Symptoms: If your symptoms have persisted for several weeks without improvement, it may be time to seek a second opinion or further evaluation. Chronic symptoms can sometimes indicate a more serious condition that requires different treatment.
2. Response to Treatment: If the lymph node remains hard and your symptoms do not improve with antibiotics, this could suggest that the underlying cause is not bacterial and may require different diagnostic approaches, such as imaging studies or blood tests.
3. Specialist Consultation: Since you are experiencing a range of systemic symptoms, it may be beneficial to consult with an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. They can evaluate your nasal congestion and throat symptoms, which may be related to an upper respiratory infection or allergies. Additionally, they can assess the lymph nodes in the neck region more thoroughly.
4. Monitoring Changes: If you notice any changes in the size of the lymph node, or if new symptoms develop, it’s crucial to report these to your healthcare provider immediately. Changes in size or consistency can be significant indicators of the underlying pathology.
5. Follow-Up: If your current doctor continues to recommend observation without further investigation, and you feel that your symptoms are not being adequately addressed, it is entirely appropriate to seek a second opinion. Your health and peace of mind are paramount.
In conclusion, while lymph nodes can react to infections and may cause localized symptoms, the systemic nature of your symptoms suggests that further evaluation is warranted. It’s essential to advocate for your health and seek additional medical attention if you feel that your concerns are not being fully addressed. Remember, you know your body best, and persistent or worsening symptoms should not be ignored.
