Height, growth plates
I am currently in the ninth grade and my height is 173 cm.
However, from February to September of this year, I only grew 1.4 cm at school.
I hope to reach a height of 178 cm.
Will I still grow taller? Do I need to get a bone age X-ray? Thank you.

Dr. Hong Ximing reply Orthopedics
Normal growth is sufficient; exercise can stimulate growth, but it is important to avoid injuries, as they may affect growth.

The question of whether you will grow taller is a common concern among adolescents, especially during the critical growth years of puberty. At 173 cm, you are already above average height for many regions, but it's natural to want to reach your ideal height, which in your case is 178 cm.
To understand your growth potential, it's essential to consider several factors, including your age, genetics, nutrition, physical activity, and the status of your growth plates. Growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue located at the ends of long bones. They are responsible for the lengthening of bones during childhood and adolescence. Once these plates close, which typically occurs in late adolescence, further height increase is unlikely.
Given that you are currently in the third year of junior high school, it is likely that your growth plates have not fully closed yet. Most boys continue to grow until around the age of 18, although the rate of growth can vary significantly. The fact that you have only grown 1.4 cm from February to September suggests that your growth rate may be slowing down, which is typical as one approaches the end of their growth period.
If you are concerned about your growth potential, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare professional who can evaluate your growth plates through an X-ray. This will provide a clearer picture of whether you still have growth potential. If your growth plates are still open, you may have a chance to grow taller, but the amount of growth can be unpredictable.
In terms of lifestyle factors that can influence growth, maintaining a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is crucial. Calcium, vitamin D, protein, and other vitamins and minerals play significant roles in bone health and growth. Regular physical activity, especially weight-bearing exercises, can also stimulate growth hormone production, which may contribute to height increase.
Sleep is another critical factor. Growth hormone is primarily secreted during deep sleep, so ensuring you get enough rest is vital for your overall health and growth. Aim for 8-10 hours of quality sleep each night, especially during your teenage years.
While genetics plays a significant role in determining height, there are still things you can do to maximize your growth potential. Engaging in sports, maintaining a healthy diet, and ensuring adequate sleep can all contribute positively. However, it's essential to have realistic expectations and understand that while you may still have some growth potential, reaching your desired height of 178 cm may or may not be achievable.
In summary, while you may still have some potential for growth, it's essential to focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice. They can help you understand your growth potential better and guide you on the best practices to support your growth during this critical period of development.
