Experiencing soreness on both sides of the lower back while sleeping?
I have a habit of sleeping on my side, but whenever I lie on my right side, the upper left side of my lower back becomes sore.
When I lie on my left side, the upper right side of my lower back becomes sore instead.
I have to use my hand to support myself to feel more comfortable, or when lying on my right side, I have to cross my left leg over my right leg in a position resembling the number 7 to provide pressure or support for comfort.
Is this a problem with my lower back? The sore spot is approximately located vertically from my armpit down to my pelvis.
This issue has persisted for a long time, and I wonder if it is causing my sleep disturbances, as I tend to toss and turn for a long time before falling asleep.

Dr. Zhang Weidong reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Hello Nana: There are many reasons for experiencing lower back pain while sleeping.
The most common causes are scoliosis or a history of lumbar strain.
In cases of scoliosis, the severity and duration should be assessed.
Mild scoliosis with a short duration can be managed with physical therapy or chiropractic treatment.
In more severe cases, a consultation with an orthopedic specialist is recommended.
For unresolved strains, applying heat to the surrounding muscles of the lower back and performing flexibility and relaxation exercises can be beneficial.
Seeking treatment from a rehabilitation specialist or traditional Chinese medicine practitioner may also help.
Less commonly, internal medical issues can lead to muscle weakness in the lower back, such as deficiencies in liver or kidney qi and blood, which may require long-term treatment with traditional Chinese medicine.
Additionally, trying a firmer mattress may help reduce strain on the lower back.
It is advisable to engage in regular exercise to strengthen the muscles, which can alleviate lower back pain and promote better sleep when the body is fatigued.
I hope this answers your questions.

More Info
It sounds like you're experiencing discomfort while sleeping on your side, which could indeed be related to your back or hip alignment. Side sleeping is a common position, but it can lead to discomfort if your body isn't properly supported. The pain you're describing, particularly in the left or right lower back depending on which side you're sleeping on, suggests that there may be an issue with your spinal alignment or muscle tension in that area.
When you sleep on your side, your spine should ideally remain in a neutral position. If your mattress is too soft or too firm, it may not provide the necessary support for your spine, leading to discomfort. Additionally, if your pillow is too high or too low, it can cause your neck to be misaligned, which can also contribute to back pain. The discomfort you're feeling in the area from your armpit down to your pelvis indicates that there may be strain on the muscles or ligaments in that region, possibly due to poor posture or inadequate support during sleep.
Here are some suggestions to help alleviate your discomfort:
1. Evaluate Your Mattress and Pillow: Ensure that your mattress is suitable for side sleeping. A medium-firm mattress is often recommended, as it provides enough support while still allowing for some contouring to your body. Your pillow should keep your head aligned with your spine. Consider using a contour pillow designed for side sleepers.
2. Use a Body Pillow: A body pillow can provide additional support for your legs and help maintain spinal alignment. Placing a pillow between your knees can also reduce strain on your hips and lower back.
3. Adjust Your Sleeping Position: While you may prefer side sleeping, try to alternate sides or even experiment with sleeping on your back with a pillow under your knees to relieve pressure on your lower back.
4. Stretching and Strengthening Exercises: Incorporate stretching and strengthening exercises into your routine to improve flexibility and strength in your back and core muscles. This can help alleviate tension and improve your overall posture.
5. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If the discomfort persists, it may be beneficial to consult a healthcare professional, such as a physical therapist or chiropractor. They can assess your posture, alignment, and any underlying issues that may be contributing to your discomfort. They may also provide targeted exercises or treatments to help alleviate your pain.
6. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Since you mentioned that you have difficulty falling asleep and often toss and turn, consider incorporating relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or gentle yoga before bed. These practices can help calm your mind and prepare your body for sleep.
In summary, the discomfort you're experiencing while sleeping on your side could be related to your mattress, pillow, or overall spinal alignment. By making some adjustments to your sleeping environment and habits, you may find relief from the pain and improve your sleep quality. If the issue continues, seeking professional advice is a prudent step to ensure that there are no underlying conditions that need to be addressed.
