Nine-valent vaccine injection
Hello, my family plans to receive the nine-valent HPV vaccine, but due to time constraints, we will only be in Taiwan for about one to one and a half months during the Lunar New Year.
I would like to ask: 1.
What is the minimum interval between the first and second doses of the nine-valent vaccine? I see that the recommendation is two months; can we administer the second dose after just one month? 2.
The recommended interval between the second and third doses is four months, but due to flight schedules, the next time we return to Taiwan will be in about 6 to 7 months.
Is it acceptable to receive the third dose more than six months after the second dose? Thank you for taking the time to respond, doctor!
Shao, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/12/05

The 9-valent HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9) is a crucial tool in the prevention of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, which are linked to various cancers, including cervical cancer. Understanding the timing and dosing schedule for this vaccine is essential for maximizing its efficacy.
1. Timing Between Doses: The recommended schedule for the 9-valent HPV vaccine typically involves three doses. The first dose is administered, followed by the second dose at least two months later, and the third dose at least six months after the first dose. While the ideal interval between the first and second doses is indeed two months, it is generally acceptable to administer the second dose as early as one month after the first dose. However, it is important to note that the immune response may be less robust if the doses are given too close together. Therefore, while you can receive the second dose one month after the first, it is advisable to adhere to the two-month recommendation if possible for optimal protection.
2. Interval Between Second and Third Doses: The recommended interval between the second and third doses is at least four months. If you find yourself in a situation where the third dose is administered six to seven months after the second dose, this is still acceptable. The CDC states that as long as the series is completed, the timing of the doses can be flexible. Therefore, while it is ideal to follow the recommended schedule, receiving the third dose later than the suggested timeframe will not negate the vaccine's effectiveness. The key is to ensure that all three doses are completed to achieve the best possible immune response.
3. Importance of Completing the Series: Completing the full series of the HPV vaccine is crucial for developing adequate immunity against the HPV types covered by the vaccine. Studies have shown that individuals who receive all three doses have significantly higher antibody levels compared to those who do not complete the series. This is particularly important for protecting against HPV-related diseases, including cervical cancer and other HPV-associated cancers.
4. Potential Side Effects and Considerations: Like any vaccine, the 9-valent HPV vaccine can cause side effects, although they are generally mild and temporary. Common side effects include pain at the injection site, fever, dizziness, and nausea. It is important to discuss any concerns about side effects with a healthcare provider, especially if there are pre-existing health conditions or if other medications are being taken.
5. Vaccination for Males: It is also worth noting that HPV vaccination is recommended for males as well, as they can also be carriers of the virus and can develop HPV-related cancers, including anal and oropharyngeal cancers. Vaccination can help reduce the overall incidence of HPV transmission and related diseases in the population.
In summary, while the ideal timing for the 9-valent HPV vaccine doses is important for achieving optimal immunity, flexibility exists in the scheduling of doses. It is crucial to complete the vaccination series, regardless of slight deviations from the recommended intervals, to ensure the best protection against HPV-related diseases. If there are any uncertainties or specific health concerns, consulting with a healthcare provider is always the best course of action.
