Efficacy of the prescription?
Dear Doctor,
I have been experiencing poor sleep and increased stress and anxiety since the second half of the year.
Recently, I decided to consult a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner.
The doctor prescribed me a formula consisting of Gui Zhi Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction with Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell) 4g, Wen Dan Tang (Warm the Gallbladder Decoction) 4g, Dan Zhi Xiao Yao San (Gardenia and Bupleurum Powder) 4g, Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root) 1g, Bai He (Lily Bulb) 1g, and Suan Zao Ren (Sour Jujube Seed) 1g.
I have been taking this medication for a week, and during my follow-up appointment today, the doctor added Yang Xin Tang (Nourishing the Heart Decoction) 3g, reducing the first three formulas by 1g each.
I am curious about the efficacy of these prescriptions.
They seem to help my sleep somewhat, but I have noticed improvements in my overall health.
However, I have been experiencing frequent bloating and poor digestion.
I am wondering if this could be related to the herbal medicine.
Additionally, for the past few days, I have been experiencing a sweet taste in my mouth, and I am unsure of the cause.
Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Dear online friend,
The prescription consisting of Guizhi Jia Longgu Muli Tang, Wenzhong Tang, Danzhi Xiaoyao San, Shengdi Huang, Baihe, and Suanzaoren, as well as Yangxin Tang, is primarily formulated to address your sleep issues, high stress levels, and feelings of anxiety.
Regarding gastrointestinal problems, they may be related to Shengdi Huang; please inform your Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner so they can adjust the prescription to better suit your needs.
Wishing you peace and health!
Sincerely,
Yen Sumei, Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nantou Hospital

More Info
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a holistic approach to treating sleep disorders and anxiety, focusing on the balance of the body's energies and the underlying causes of these conditions. The prescription you received, which includes 桂枝加龍骨牡蠣湯 (Gui Zhi Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang), 溫膽湯 (Wen Dan Tang), 丹梔逍遙散 (Dan Zhi Xiao Yao San), 生地黃 (Sheng Di Huang), 百合 (Bai He), and 酸棗仁 (Suan Zao Ren), is designed to address both sleep issues and anxiety by nourishing the heart, calming the spirit, and harmonizing the digestive system.
Effects of the Herbal Formula
1. Gui Zhi Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang: This formula is traditionally used to calm the spirit and alleviate anxiety. The combination of 桂枝 (Gui Zhi), 龍骨 (Long Gu), and 牡蠣 (Mu Li) works to stabilize the heart and reduce restlessness, which can be beneficial for sleep.
2. Wen Dan Tang: This formula is often used for digestive issues and is known to help with phlegm accumulation, which can contribute to anxiety and sleep disturbances. By addressing digestive health, it may indirectly improve sleep quality.
3. Dan Zhi Xiao Yao San: This is a well-known formula for relieving stress and emotional disturbances. It helps to regulate liver Qi and can alleviate feelings of anxiety, which may improve sleep.
4. Sheng Di Huang: This herb is used to nourish the blood and cool the body, which can be beneficial for those experiencing insomnia due to heat or deficiency.
5. Bai He: Known for its calming properties, Bai He is often used to nourish the heart and improve sleep quality.
6. Suan Zao Ren: This herb is particularly effective for insomnia and anxiety, as it nourishes the heart and liver, promoting relaxation and better sleep.
Observations and Side Effects
You mentioned feeling some improvement in your overall health, but also experiencing gastrointestinal issues such as bloating and a sweet taste in your mouth. These symptoms could be related to the herbal treatment, as TCM herbs can sometimes affect digestion.
- Bloating: Some herbs can have a warming effect on the digestive system, which might lead to bloating, especially if your body is not accustomed to them. It’s essential to monitor your diet and hydration as well, as these factors can also contribute to digestive discomfort.
- Sweet Taste: A sweet taste in the mouth can sometimes be associated with digestive issues or an imbalance in the body's energy. It might also be a side effect of certain herbs, particularly those that are sweet in nature. If this persists, it would be advisable to discuss it with your TCM practitioner.
Recommendations
1. Continue Monitoring: Keep track of your symptoms and any changes you experience. If the gastrointestinal issues persist or worsen, consult your TCM practitioner for possible adjustments to your formula.
2. Dietary Considerations: Pay attention to your diet. Incorporating easily digestible foods and avoiding heavy or greasy meals can help alleviate bloating.
3. Follow-Up: Regular follow-ups with your TCM practitioner are crucial. They can adjust your herbal formula based on your progress and any side effects you may experience.
4. Holistic Approach: In addition to herbal treatment, consider integrating lifestyle changes such as mindfulness practices, gentle exercise, and proper sleep hygiene to further support your mental and physical health.
In conclusion, TCM can be an effective approach to managing sleep and anxiety, but it’s essential to communicate openly with your practitioner about any side effects or concerns. This collaboration will help ensure that your treatment is both effective and comfortable.
