Closure of the growth plates?

When I was 20 years old, I had an examination of my growth plates, and there was only a small amount left, about the size of a sesame seed.
Now that I am 21, is there still a chance for me to grow taller? I've heard many people say that males may not completely close their growth plates, and they recommend that I consider calcium supplements along with exercise, sleep, and diet to potentially increase my height by 3 to 8 centimeters.
Is this possible?

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/01/10

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics

After the age of 15-16, the growth plates in males will close.
Once the growth plates are closed, it is not possible to grow taller, and medications or calcium supplementation will not have any effect.

At the age of 21, the likelihood of growing taller is significantly diminished due to the closure of the growth plates, also known as epiphyseal plates. These plates are areas of developing cartilage tissue located at the ends of long bones, and they are responsible for the lengthening of bones during childhood and adolescence. Once these growth plates close, which typically occurs in late adolescence to early adulthood, the bones can no longer grow in length, and therefore, height increase is not possible.

In males, growth plates usually close around the ages of 16 to 18, although some may remain open slightly longer. If you were assessed at age 20 and found that your growth plates were nearly closed, it is highly likely that they have fully closed by now at age 21. The small amount of growth you mentioned, akin to the size of a sesame seed, indicates that there is minimal potential for further growth.
The idea that males may have a chance to grow taller after 21 is often based on anecdotal evidence rather than scientific fact. While it is true that some individuals may experience slight increases in height due to factors like spinal decompression (which can occur after sleeping or stretching), this is generally not significant enough to result in a measurable increase in height.
Regarding the recommendations you’ve encountered about using calcium supplements, exercise, and proper nutrition to stimulate growth, it is essential to understand that while these factors are crucial for overall health and can support growth during the developmental years, they will not reverse the closure of growth plates. Calcium and vitamin D are vital for bone health, but they cannot reopen closed growth plates or stimulate further growth once the skeletal system has matured.

In terms of height, genetics plays a significant role, and while nutrition and lifestyle can influence growth during the growing years, they cannot change the genetic predisposition once the growth plates have closed.
If you are concerned about your height or overall health, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare professional, such as an endocrinologist or an orthopedic specialist. They can provide personalized advice based on your health history and current condition.
In summary, at 21 years old, the chances of growing taller are very slim, especially if your growth plates have closed. While maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important, it is unlikely to result in significant height increases at this stage.

Once the growth plates have closed, there is no way to reopen them for further height increase. The only option for increasing height after the growth phase is through limb lengthening surgery. Theoretically, individuals will not grow taller after reaching their growth age.
