Regarding growth plates and height increase issues?

Hello, Doctor.
I heard that the growth plates in males typically close around the age of 16.
I would like to know if there is any way to reopen closed growth plates or if it is possible for someone whose growth plates have closed to gain additional height.
Given my age, my growth plates should have already closed (although I haven't confirmed this with an X-ray), but I am very hopeful that there are other methods to help me grow a bit taller, even just 2 centimeters...
I'm open to any options as long as they don't harm my health.
Thank you! Additionally, I would like to ask why some people experience slight increases in height (perhaps 1 or 2 centimeters) after the growth period has ended.
What could be the reason for this?

Once the growth plates have closed, there is no way to reopen them for further height increase.
The only option for increasing height after the growth phase is through limb lengthening surgery.
Theoretically, individuals will not grow taller after reaching their growth age.

When it comes to height increase after the closure of growth plates, it's essential to understand the biological processes involved in growth and development. Growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are areas of cartilage located at the ends of long bones. They are responsible for the lengthening of bones during childhood and adolescence. In males, these growth plates typically close around the ages of 16 to 18, while in females, they usually close a bit earlier, around 14 to 16 years of age. Once these plates are closed, the potential for further height increase is significantly diminished.

To address your question directly: once the growth plates have closed, there is currently no scientifically validated method to reopen them or stimulate further growth in height. This closure is a natural part of the maturation process, and it signifies that the bones have reached their maximum length. While there are anecdotal reports of individuals experiencing slight increases in height after the typical growth period, these instances are generally attributed to factors such as improved posture, spinal decompression, or temporary changes in the intervertebral discs rather than actual bone growth.

Regarding your inquiry about methods to potentially increase height after growth plate closure, it's important to note that while certain activities like stretching, yoga, and exercises that promote good posture can enhance your overall appearance and may help you stand taller, they do not contribute to actual bone lengthening. Engaging in sports such as basketball or activities like hanging from a bar (as you mentioned with the pull-up bar) can improve your posture and flexibility, but they will not reopen growth plates or lead to significant height increases.

As for the use of growth hormones, they are typically prescribed only in specific medical conditions where growth hormone deficiency is diagnosed. The use of growth hormones in individuals with closed growth plates is not supported by medical evidence and can pose health risks. Therefore, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional before considering any hormonal treatments.

In terms of nutrition, while a balanced diet rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals is essential for overall health and can support growth during the active growth years, it will not reverse the closure of growth plates. Adequate nutrition is vital for maintaining bone health and density, but it does not influence height once growth plates have closed.

Lastly, the slight height increase some individuals experience after their growth years can often be attributed to factors like spinal health. The spine can compress and decompress due to various factors, including posture and physical activity. Additionally, some people may experience changes in their intervertebral discs, which can lead to minor fluctuations in height.

In conclusion, while the desire to increase height is understandable, especially during adolescence, it is crucial to have realistic expectations based on biological growth patterns. Once growth plates are closed, the likelihood of significant height increase is minimal. Focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, good nutrition, and proper posture, which can enhance your overall well-being and confidence. If you have concerns about your growth or health, consulting with a healthcare provider or an endocrinologist can provide personalized guidance and support.
