Recently, there has been itching in the glans?
Hello: Yesterday I noticed itching on my penis, and when I checked under the foreskin during a bathroom visit today, I saw what seems to be some growths near the glans and the urethral opening.
They look like small bumps, not many, but just a small patch.
They don't hurt when I touch them, but they are itchy.
What could this issue be? Thank you.

Hello: It is likely related to the sebaceous glands, but you should keep the area clean and dry, and consult a physician when you have the time.
Thank you for your inquiry.

More Info
Itchy glans, or itching of the glans penis, can be a common issue that many men experience at some point in their lives. The symptoms you describe, including the presence of small bumps or lesions near the glans, can be indicative of several potential conditions. It’s important to understand the possible causes and appropriate solutions to address this discomfort effectively.
Possible Causes
1. Infections: One of the most common causes of itching in the genital area is a fungal or yeast infection, such as candidiasis. This can occur due to an overgrowth of yeast, particularly in warm, moist environments. Bacterial infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like herpes or genital warts, can also cause itching and the appearance of bumps.
2. Dermatitis: Contact dermatitis, which can result from irritation or an allergic reaction to soaps, lotions, or latex condoms, may lead to itching and redness. This condition can also cause small bumps or rashes.
3. Poor Hygiene: Inadequate cleaning of the genital area can lead to the accumulation of smegma, a substance that can irritate the skin and cause itching. Regular washing with mild soap and water can help prevent this.
4. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, harmless bumps that can appear around the glans and are often mistaken for a medical issue. They are a normal anatomical variation and do not require treatment.
5. Lichen Sclerosus: This is a chronic skin condition that can cause white patches, itching, and discomfort in the genital area. It is more common in men who are uncircumcised.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: The first step in addressing your symptoms is to consult a healthcare provider or a dermatologist. They can perform a physical examination, take a medical history, and possibly conduct tests to determine the exact cause of your symptoms.
2. Maintain Good Hygiene: Ensure that you are cleaning the genital area regularly with mild soap and water. Avoid using harsh soaps or scented products that can irritate the skin.
3. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that your symptoms may be due to contact dermatitis, try to identify and avoid potential irritants, such as certain soaps, lotions, or laundry detergents.
4. Topical Treatments: Depending on the diagnosis, your healthcare provider may recommend topical antifungal creams for yeast infections or corticosteroids for inflammatory conditions. Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream can also help reduce itching and inflammation.
5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, including the appearance of new bumps, changes in color, or any discharge. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.
6. Avoid Sexual Activity: Until you have a clear diagnosis, it may be wise to avoid sexual activity to prevent potential transmission of infections and to allow the area to heal.
Conclusion
While itchy glans and the presence of small bumps can be concerning, many causes are treatable and not serious. It’s essential to seek medical advice to get an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Remember that open communication with your healthcare provider about your symptoms is crucial for effective management and peace of mind.
