Headache one month after a car accident?
About mid-December last year, I was involved in a motorcycle accident.
I didn't get thrown off; I just fell down with the motorcycle while wearing a helmet.
I was a passenger and managed to get up after the fall.
I didn't go to the hospital for a check-up, and afterward, I didn't have much issue, just some bruises.
My head only hurt for a few days, but then it went away.
However, a month later, I've been experiencing occasional headaches, primarily in the back of my head and on the left side of my temple.
I've never had headaches before.
Should I get checked out?

Post-car accident headaches can be a concerning issue, especially when they arise after a traumatic event like a car crash. Given your description of the incident and the subsequent headaches, it is important to understand the potential implications and when to seek medical attention.
Firstly, it is essential to recognize that headaches following a head injury can be a symptom of various underlying conditions. While you mentioned that you were wearing a helmet and did not experience severe symptoms immediately after the accident, it is still possible for headaches to develop later. This can occur due to several reasons, including but not limited to:
1. Concussion: Even with a helmet, a concussion can occur, which may not present immediate symptoms. Headaches are a common symptom of concussions and can persist for days, weeks, or even longer.
2. Cervical Strain: The impact from the accident may have caused strain or injury to the neck muscles, leading to tension headaches. This type of headache often manifests as a dull, aching pain that can radiate from the neck to the back of the head.
3. Post-Traumatic Headache: This is a specific type of headache that can occur after a head injury. It may resemble tension-type headaches or migraines and can be triggered by stress, physical activity, or changes in sleep patterns.
4. Intracranial Issues: Although less common, there is a risk of intracranial bleeding or other serious conditions that may not be immediately apparent. Symptoms such as persistent headaches, nausea, vomiting, or changes in vision should be taken seriously.
Given that you have experienced headaches that are new to you, particularly in the areas of the back of the head and the left temple, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation. Here are some guidelines on when to seek medical attention:
- Persistent Symptoms: If your headaches continue for more than a few days or worsen over time, it is important to consult a healthcare professional.
- Severity of Pain: If the headaches are severe or debilitating, or if they are accompanied by other symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, or visual disturbances, immediate medical attention is warranted.
- Changes in Symptoms: If you notice any new symptoms, such as weakness, numbness, or difficulty speaking, you should seek emergency care.
- History of Head Injury: Given your recent car accident, any new or worsening headache should be evaluated by a healthcare provider, especially since you did not have a thorough medical examination immediately after the incident.
In conclusion, while it is possible that your headaches may be related to tension or stress, the history of a recent car accident necessitates a careful evaluation. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to head injuries. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough assessment, which may include a physical examination and possibly imaging studies, to rule out any serious conditions and provide appropriate treatment options. Remember, your health and well-being are paramount, and seeking medical advice is a proactive step in managing your symptoms effectively.
