Height issues
Hello Doctor: I am 14 years old, female, and I got my first period in the first year of junior high school.
My height is currently about 157 cm, and I really want to grow to over 165 cm.
Is that still possible? Over the past two years of junior high, I have grown about 6 to 9 cm intermittently.
I previously had a bone age assessment, and it seemed to match my actual age.
I will turn 15 in June.
Besides skipping rope, is running beneficial for growth? I am currently receiving acupuncture treatment for my legs; is that helpful or not advisable? Additionally, I have allergic rhinitis.
Would treating it with traditional Chinese medicine help with my growth? Thank you for your response; I really want to grow taller! Thank you.

1.
Currently, a 14-year-old female who started menstruating in the first year of junior high school, with a height of 157 cm, is concerned that reaching a height of over 165 cm may be difficult.
2.
Activities such as jumping rope, playing basketball, and running are beneficial.
3.
Acupuncture and the treatment of allergic rhinitis fall outside the expertise of orthopedics; please consult a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner for further advice.
Thank you for your question.

More Info
At 14 years old, you are still within the growth phase of your life, and there is a possibility that you can grow taller. The growth plates in your bones are still open, which means your body can still produce new bone tissue. However, the extent to which you can grow taller is influenced by several factors, including genetics, nutrition, sleep, and physical activity.
Firstly, it's important to understand that genetics play a significant role in determining your height. Since you mentioned that your height is currently around 157 cm and you aspire to reach 165 cm or taller, it’s essential to consider the heights of your parents and other family members. If they are relatively shorter, it may limit your potential height increase, but it does not eliminate the possibility.
Nutrition is a critical factor in growth. At your age, your body requires adequate amounts of protein, calcium, vitamins, and minerals to support bone growth. Protein is essential for building and repairing tissues, while calcium is crucial for bone health. You should aim to consume a balanced diet that includes lean meats, dairy products, legumes, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Drinking milk and eating foods rich in calcium and vitamin D can help strengthen your bones. Additionally, ensure you are getting enough calories to support your growth.
Sleep is another vital component of growth. Growth hormone, which is responsible for growth and development, is primarily secreted during deep sleep. It is recommended that teenagers get about 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. If you have irregular sleep patterns or insufficient sleep, it could hinder your growth potential. Establishing a regular sleep schedule and creating a conducive sleep environment can help improve your sleep quality.
Physical activity is also important for growth. Engaging in exercises that promote stretching and strengthening of the muscles and bones can be beneficial. Activities like running, jumping rope, swimming, and playing basketball can stimulate the growth plates in your bones. While running is a great cardiovascular exercise, it may not be as effective as jumping rope or playing basketball in terms of stimulating vertical growth. However, any form of physical activity is better than none, as it helps maintain a healthy body and promotes overall well-being.
Regarding your question about acupuncture, while some people believe it can help with growth, scientific evidence supporting this claim is limited. Acupuncture may help with relaxation and overall health, but it is unlikely to have a direct impact on height increase. If you enjoy acupuncture and find it beneficial for your overall health, it can be a part of your wellness routine, but it should not be relied upon solely for height increase.
As for your allergic rhinitis, managing your allergies is essential for your overall health and well-being. If your allergies are severe and affecting your quality of life, it’s advisable to seek treatment. While treating your allergies may not directly influence your height, being healthy and free from chronic conditions can help ensure that your body is in the best condition to grow.
In conclusion, while you may still have the potential to grow taller, it is essential to focus on a balanced diet, regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and managing any health issues. Keep in mind that growth can vary significantly from person to person, and it is essential to be patient and allow your body to grow at its own pace. If you have concerns about your growth or health, consider consulting a healthcare professional for personalized advice and guidance.
