Can I Still Grow Taller at 18? Growth Potential and Options - Orthopedics

Hello doctor, I would like to ask if I can still grow taller?

I am now 18 years old, just turned 18.
From the end of middle school to the end of high school, I only grew 3 to 4 centimeters.
My parents are not tall; my mother is 157 cm and my father is around 165 cm.
I am currently 168 cm tall and weigh 70 kg, but I would like to grow another 5 cm.
As for secondary sexual characteristics, I have a bit of pubic hair, not much leg hair but it is long, very little armpit hair, and very little facial hair that I have never shaved.
The facial hair is soft, and my Adam's apple is not very prominent (perhaps because I am overweight).
My face is still prone to oiliness.
I would like to know if I can still grow taller.
If I need to get a bone age assessment, which department should I visit, and how much does it typically cost?

Hello, online friend: The factors affecting height are quite complex.
Typically, individuals do not grow taller after the age of eighteen, although there are some rare cases where growth may continue into later years.
If you only need an X-ray to examine the growth plates, many specialties can perform that.
However, if you require more specialized consultation, pediatric clinics often have growth consultation services available for consideration.
Wishing you good health.

At 18 years old, you are at a critical juncture regarding your growth potential. Generally, males experience their peak growth during puberty, which typically occurs between the ages of 12 and 16. By the time you reach 18, most males have completed their growth spurts, and the growth plates in the long bones are beginning to close. However, there are exceptions, and some individuals may continue to grow slightly into their early twenties, depending on various factors.

Given your height of 168 cm and the fact that your parents are relatively shorter (your mother at 157 cm and your father at 165 cm), it is understandable that you are concerned about your height and wish to grow taller. The growth potential is influenced by genetics, nutrition, physical activity, and overall health. Since you mentioned that you have not grown much during your high school years, it is possible that your growth plates are nearing closure, which would limit further height increase.

To assess your growth potential accurately, a doctor can evaluate your bone age through an X-ray of your hand and wrist. This X-ray will show the status of your growth plates and help determine whether you still have the potential to grow taller. If you want to pursue this, you should consult an endocrinologist or an orthopedic specialist, as they are the appropriate medical professionals to evaluate growth issues. The cost of such an X-ray can vary depending on your location and healthcare provider, but it typically ranges from $100 to $300.

In terms of lifestyle changes that could potentially support your growth, consider the following:
1. Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, protein, and other essential nutrients is crucial for bone health. Foods like dairy products, leafy greens, lean meats, and fish can help support your growth.

2. Exercise: Engaging in regular physical activity, especially exercises that promote stretching and posture, can be beneficial. Activities like swimming, basketball, and yoga can help improve your overall fitness and posture, which may give the appearance of being taller.

3. Sleep: Adequate sleep is essential for growth and overall health. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night, as growth hormone is primarily released during deep sleep.

4. Posture: Maintaining good posture can make a significant difference in how tall you appear. Practice standing and sitting up straight to maximize your height.

5. Avoid Growth Stunting Factors: Avoid smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and other unhealthy habits that can negatively impact your growth and overall health.

While it is natural to wish for a few more centimeters in height, it is essential to focus on your overall health and well-being. Height is just one aspect of who you are, and many successful individuals come in all shapes and sizes. If you have concerns about your growth or any other health issues, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for personalized advice and support.
