Inverted nipples in children?

Hello doctor, my son is now over three years old and I have noticed that his nipples are inverted.
I initially thought it was because he is a bit overweight (100 cm, 20 kg), but after looking at old photos, I realized he has had this since infancy.
Will inverted nipples have any impact? Will it improve as he grows older? Thank you.

Miss Wang, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/03/16

Dr. Xiao Kaiwen reply Pediatrics

I would like to just observe as long as there is no pain, erosion, or discharge, because breast development typically begins closer to puberty.

Inverted nipples in children, particularly in a three-year-old, can be a source of concern for parents, but it's important to understand that this condition is not uncommon and can have various causes. Inverted nipples can occur due to several factors, including anatomical variations, hormonal influences, or even developmental changes that occur as a child grows.

Firstly, it is essential to recognize that inverted nipples can be a normal anatomical variation. Many children may have nipples that appear inverted or flat, and this can be completely benign. In many cases, as children grow and undergo hormonal changes during puberty, the appearance of the nipples may change, and they may become more prominent or revert to a more typical appearance.
In some instances, inverted nipples can be associated with underlying conditions, such as tethered tissue or developmental issues. However, in young children, this is often not a cause for concern. If the inverted nipples are not accompanied by any other symptoms, such as pain, discharge, or changes in the surrounding skin, it is likely that there is no significant issue.

It is also worth noting that inverted nipples can sometimes be a result of the way the breast tissue develops. In infants and toddlers, the breast tissue is still developing, and the appearance of the nipples can change as they grow. If your son had inverted nipples as a baby and they have persisted, it may simply be a characteristic of his anatomy that does not require intervention.

If you are concerned about the appearance of your son's nipples or if there are any accompanying symptoms, it would be prudent to consult with a pediatrician. They can perform a physical examination and provide reassurance or further evaluation if necessary. Pediatricians are experienced in assessing developmental concerns and can help determine if any further investigation is warranted.

In summary, inverted nipples in young children are often a normal variation and may resolve on their own as the child grows. However, if there are any concerns or additional symptoms, seeking medical advice is always a good step. Regular check-ups with a pediatrician can help monitor your child's development and address any questions or concerns you may have.

Dr. Xie Wenhuai reply Breast and Thyroid
Nipple inversion is caused by the pulling of the breast ligaments and is generally not a cause for concern. In boys, it is even less of an issue. In girls, surgery is only considered if it is related to breastfeeding factors.
