Closure of the growth plates?
A few days ago, I had an X-ray, and the doctor said that the growth plates in my knees have closed, but the ones in my pelvis have not.
He mentioned that there is still a chance for me to grow taller.
Is this true?

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics
Around the age of 15, it is still possible to grow a little more.
However, if the growth plates are completely closed, then no further height increase will occur.

Understanding growth plate closure is crucial for anyone concerned about their height. Growth plates, also known as epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue located at the ends of long bones. They play a significant role in bone growth during childhood and adolescence. When growth plates close, which typically occurs after puberty, the bones can no longer grow in length, and thus, height increases cease.
In your case, the doctor mentioned that while the growth plates in your knees have closed, the ones in your pelvis are still open. This is an important distinction. The closure of growth plates varies from person to person and can occur at different times for different bones. Generally, the growth plates in the long bones of the legs (like the femur and tibia) close around the ages of 18 to 21 for males, while those in the pelvis may remain open for a longer period, sometimes until the mid-20s.
The fact that your pelvic growth plates are still open suggests that you may still have some potential for height increase. However, the amount of growth that can occur after the closure of the knee growth plates may be limited. It is essential to understand that while there may be a chance for additional height, it is not guaranteed, and the growth may be minimal.
To maximize your growth potential, it is advisable to focus on several key factors:
1. Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is crucial for growth. Ensure you are consuming adequate amounts of protein, calcium, vitamin D, and other vitamins and minerals that support bone health. Foods like dairy products, lean meats, fish, fruits, and vegetables should be staples in your diet.
2. Exercise: Regular physical activity, particularly weight-bearing exercises, can help stimulate growth hormone production and promote bone health. Activities such as swimming, cycling, and even stretching exercises can be beneficial. Hanging exercises, like those you mentioned (e.g., hanging from a pull-up bar), may help improve posture and spinal alignment, which can give the appearance of added height.
3. Sleep: Growth hormone is primarily released during deep sleep, so getting enough quality sleep is essential for growth. Aim for 8-10 hours of sleep per night, especially during your teenage years when growth is most active.
4. Avoiding Growth Inhibitors: Certain lifestyle factors can inhibit growth, such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and poor nutrition. Avoiding these can help ensure that your body has the best chance to grow.
5. Regular Check-ups: Continue to monitor your growth with regular check-ups. If you have concerns about your growth or development, consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice and possibly conduct further assessments, such as X-rays, to monitor your growth plates.
In conclusion, while the closure of the knee growth plates indicates that significant height increase may be limited, the open pelvic growth plates provide a glimmer of hope for further growth. Focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition, exercise, and sleep, and keep in touch with your healthcare provider for ongoing assessments. Remember, genetics play a significant role in determining your final height, so it's essential to manage your expectations while taking proactive steps to support your growth potential.
