Rectal foreign body

Hello, I usually experience constipation, but one day I had severe abdominal pain that led to diarrhea.
The first time, there were no significant symptoms.
The second time, I felt the urge but could only pass a small amount of watery stool.
After a third attempt, I still couldn't pass anything and noticed a foreign body sensation in the anus, accompanied by slight pain, rated about 1 out of 10.
Upon examining the anus, I saw that about half of it was obstructed by a mass that was pale red in color, resembling a piece of raw flesh blocking the opening.
What could this symptom indicate? Should I seek medical attention, or is it likely to resolve on its own? Is it inconvenient to seek medical help during my menstrual period? Thank you.

Miss Lin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/04/04

Rectal foreign bodies may be associated with hemorrhoids.
Straining during bowel movements can easily lead to hemorrhoids, which may not necessarily be painful.
Hemorrhoids are classified by severity: first degree involves bleeding without prolapse, second degree involves prolapse after bowel movements but can be manually reduced, third degree involves prolapse that requires manual reduction, and fourth degree involves prolapse that cannot be reduced.
For first and second degree hemorrhoids, it is recommended to increase dietary fiber intake, along with warm sitz baths and topical ointments or suppositories for treatment.
If there is no improvement or if there are any concerns, it is advisable to seek medical attention.

More Info

It sounds like you are experiencing a concerning situation with your bowel movements and the presence of a foreign body in the rectal area. Based on your description, it seems you may have a rectal foreign body, which can occur for various reasons, including accidental insertion or as a result of severe constipation.

Symptoms of Rectal Foreign Bodies
The symptoms you are experiencing, such as severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, and the sensation of a foreign object in the rectum, are common indicators of a rectal foreign body. The presence of a reddish, fleshy mass at the anal opening could suggest swelling or irritation in the area, possibly due to the foreign body obstructing the passage. Other symptoms may include:
- Pain during bowel movements
- Difficulty passing stool
- Rectal bleeding
- Discomfort or a feeling of fullness in the rectal area
- Changes in bowel habits

When to Seek Medical Help
It is crucial to seek medical attention if you experience any of the following:
1. Severe Pain: If the pain becomes unbearable or does not improve.

2. Bleeding: Any significant rectal bleeding should be evaluated immediately.

3. Persistent Symptoms: If you cannot pass stool or gas, or if the sensation of a foreign body persists.

4. Signs of Infection: Fever, chills, or any signs of systemic infection.

5. Inability to Remove the Object: If you have attempted to remove the object yourself without success.

Medical Evaluation
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to see a healthcare provider as soon as possible. They can perform a physical examination and possibly imaging studies to determine the nature of the obstruction and the best course of action. In some cases, a healthcare professional may need to remove the foreign body manually or surgically, especially if it is causing significant obstruction or injury.

Considerations During Menstruation
While being on your menstrual period may make you feel uncomfortable about seeking medical help, it should not prevent you from getting the care you need. Healthcare providers are accustomed to dealing with such situations and can provide appropriate care regardless of your menstrual status. It is essential to prioritize your health and address any potential complications that may arise from the foreign body.

Conclusion
In summary, your symptoms suggest the presence of a rectal foreign body, and it is important to seek medical attention promptly. Do not hesitate to visit a healthcare facility, as they can provide the necessary evaluation and treatment to alleviate your symptoms and prevent further complications. Remember, your health and well-being should always come first.
