Foreign bodies in the anal canal and rectum?
Hello Doctor: Recently, while cleaning my anus, I noticed that when I inserted my finger into the anal canal, I felt some hard, lump-like areas (about half a finger's depth) that were somewhat rough and uneven.
However, touching or pressing on them does not cause any pain.
I also noticed one or two small red growths on the outside of my anus.
I have recently engaged in anal intercourse with my boyfriend.
Could this be genital warts, or possibly herpes or eczema? I am very concerned and wondering if it is necessary to go to the hospital for an examination.
Should I schedule an appointment with a colorectal surgeon for a digital examination? Thank you.

Based on your description, it could be hemorrhoids, commonly known as "cauliflower" warts (condyloma acuminatum), or other conditions.
It is recommended that you visit a hospital's surgical department for further examination.

When it comes to concerns about rectal foreign bodies or any abnormalities in the anal or rectal area, it is essential to approach the situation with caution and seek medical advice. Based on your description, it sounds like you have noticed some unusual findings during personal hygiene practices, including hard, rough areas within the rectum and small red growths on the outside.
Firstly, the hard, rough areas you described could be indicative of several conditions, including hemorrhoids, anal warts (which can be caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV), or other benign growths. The presence of small red growths outside the anus could also be related to these conditions. It is important to note that while some of these conditions can be benign, others may require medical intervention or treatment.
Given your recent sexual activity, particularly anal intercourse, it is crucial to consider the potential for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or other complications. Anal intercourse can sometimes lead to trauma or irritation in the anal area, which might explain some of the symptoms you are experiencing. However, the lack of pain when touching or pressing the areas you described is a positive sign, as pain can often indicate inflammation or infection.
In terms of whether you should seek medical help, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional, especially if you are experiencing any discomfort, changes in bowel habits, or if the symptoms persist. A visit to a colorectal surgeon or a gastroenterologist would be appropriate, as they can perform a thorough examination, including a digital rectal exam, to assess the situation accurately.
During your appointment, the doctor may ask about your symptoms in detail, including the duration, any associated pain, changes in bowel movements, and any other relevant medical history. They may also perform a physical examination to evaluate the growths and any abnormalities you have noticed. If necessary, they might recommend further diagnostic tests, such as an anoscopy or a colonoscopy, to visualize the rectal area more clearly.
It is understandable to feel anxious about these symptoms, especially with concerns about conditions like genital warts or herpes. However, it is essential to remember that many conditions can present with similar symptoms, and a healthcare professional will be able to provide a proper diagnosis and treatment plan based on their findings.
In summary, it is advisable to seek medical attention for your symptoms. Visiting a colorectal surgeon for a thorough examination is a prudent step. They will be able to provide you with the necessary information and reassurance regarding your condition, and if needed, they can recommend appropriate treatments or interventions. Taking this step will help alleviate your concerns and ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly.
