Experiencing the urge to defecate during sexual intercourse with a boyfriend?

Yesterday, I had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend, and I experienced a sensation of needing to have a bowel movement.
I wasn't very relaxed, and I was holding back my anus because I was afraid that something might actually come out.
I also had regular bowel movements in the morning and do not have any issues with constipation; I only have irregular periods and am taking menstrual regulation pills to adjust that.
I hope to have enjoyable and comfortable sexual experiences.
I haven't discussed this issue with him yet because I feel embarrassed.
Is this normal? I've read some articles that suggest this is a common phenomenon because there is only a thin layer of connective tissue between the vagina and the rectum.
When there is excessive stimulation of the vagina, it can put pressure on the nerve receptors in the rectum, leading to the sensation of needing to defecate.
How can I improve this issue?

Ting, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/04/05

Experiencing the urge to poop during sex can be an uncomfortable and confusing situation, but it is not uncommon. The anatomy of the female body plays a significant role in this phenomenon. The vagina and rectum are indeed in close proximity, separated only by a thin layer of connective tissue. This anatomical arrangement means that stimulation of the vagina can sometimes exert pressure on the rectum, leading to sensations that mimic the urge to defecate.

First and foremost, it’s important to recognize that feeling this way during sexual activity is a normal response for many women. The body can react in various ways to sexual stimulation, and the urge to poop can be one of them. This sensation can be heightened if you are feeling tense or anxious, as stress can lead to muscle tension, including in the pelvic area. If you are not fully relaxed during sex, this tension can exacerbate the feeling of needing to have a bowel movement.

To address this issue, consider the following strategies:
1. Communication with Your Partner: While it may feel awkward, discussing your feelings and experiences with your partner can help alleviate some of the anxiety associated with this sensation. Open communication can foster a more relaxed atmosphere, making it easier for both of you to enjoy intimacy without fear of embarrassment.

2. Relaxation Techniques: Prior to engaging in sexual activity, practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or gentle stretching. These methods can help reduce overall tension in your body, making it easier to relax during sex.

3. Positioning: Experimenting with different sexual positions may help. Some positions may put less pressure on the rectum than others. For instance, positions that allow for more control over depth and angle of penetration might help alleviate the sensation of needing to poop.

4. Pelvic Floor Exercises: Strengthening your pelvic floor muscles through exercises like Kegels can help you gain better control over your pelvic area. This can lead to improved comfort during sex and may help you feel more in control of your bodily sensations.

5. Timing: If you are concerned about feeling the urge to poop during sex, consider timing sexual activity after you have had a bowel movement. This can help reduce anxiety about needing to go during intimacy.

6. Consulting a Healthcare Professional: If this sensation continues to cause distress or if you experience other symptoms such as pain or discomfort, it may be beneficial to consult a healthcare provider. They can provide a thorough evaluation and offer tailored advice.

In summary, while feeling the urge to poop during sex can be disconcerting, it is a common experience linked to the anatomical structure of the female body. By fostering open communication with your partner, practicing relaxation techniques, experimenting with different positions, and potentially consulting a healthcare professional, you can work towards a more comfortable and enjoyable sexual experience. Remember, intimacy should be a source of pleasure and connection, and addressing any concerns openly can enhance that experience for both you and your partner.
