Glans issues
Hello Doctor: I have a small red spot on my glans that sometimes disappears and sometimes reappears.
This symptom has been ongoing for a while.
Previously, I also had white flakes on the glans that would itch.
I visited a clinic, and they recommended using a cleansing solution for the glans.
The white flakes and itching have resolved, but the red spot still occasionally appears and disappears.
The red spot itself is neither itchy nor painful, which is quite concerning for me.
Please help me understand this.
Thank you.

Hello: If the red spots have been present since childhood, they are usually not a cause for concern.
However, if they appeared after sexual activity, especially after unprotected intercourse, please consult a urologist at the hospital (when the red spots are present).
Thank you for your inquiry.

More Info
The presence of red spots on the glans (the tip of the penis) can be concerning, and it's understandable that you are seeking clarity on this issue. Based on your description, it seems that you have experienced a recurring red spot, along with previous symptoms of white flakes and itching, which have since resolved with the use of a cleansing solution. Here, I will outline potential causes for the red spot, as well as recommendations for management and when to seek further medical attention.
Possible Causes of Red Spots on the Glans
1. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, benign bumps that can appear around the glans. They are normal anatomical variations and do not require treatment.
2. Balanitis: This is an inflammation of the glans, often caused by irritation, infection, or poor hygiene. Symptoms can include redness, swelling, and sometimes discharge. Since you mentioned using a cleansing solution, it’s possible that previous irritation has been alleviated, but residual inflammation could still cause the red spot.
3. Fungal Infections: Conditions such as candidiasis (yeast infection) can lead to red spots and flaking skin. These infections can cause itching and discomfort, but sometimes they can present with minimal symptoms.
4. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs can manifest as red spots or lesions on the glans. If you have had unprotected sexual contact, it is essential to consider this possibility.
5. Allergic Reactions or Contact Dermatitis: Sometimes, reactions to soaps, lotions, or other products can cause localized redness. If you have recently changed any personal care products, this could be a factor.
6. Fordyce Spots: These are small, painless, pale bumps that can appear on the glans and are completely harmless.
Recommendations for Management
- Maintain Good Hygiene: Continue to keep the area clean and dry. Use mild, unscented soaps and avoid harsh chemicals that could irritate the skin.
- Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that a product may be causing irritation, discontinue its use. This includes soaps, lotions, and even certain types of condoms.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the red spot. If it changes in appearance, begins to itch, or if you develop additional symptoms (such as pain, discharge, or fever), it would be wise to seek medical attention.
- Consider a Dermatological Evaluation: If the red spot persists or recurs frequently, a consultation with a dermatologist or urologist may be beneficial. They can provide a thorough examination and may perform tests to rule out infections or other conditions.
When to Seek Medical Attention
- If the red spot becomes painful or starts to bleed.
- If you notice any unusual discharge from the penis.
- If you develop systemic symptoms such as fever or swollen lymph nodes.
- If the red spot persists for an extended period without improvement.
In conclusion, while the red spot on the glans may not be a cause for immediate concern, it is essential to monitor the situation and maintain good hygiene practices. If symptoms change or worsen, do not hesitate to seek professional medical advice. Understanding the underlying cause is crucial for effective management and peace of mind.
