Please provide your questions regarding Povidone-Iodine (Betadine Oral Spray)?
Hello, may I ask if Povidone-Iodine (Betadine Oral Spray) can be used long-term? I often experience throat itching and pain, and I frequently visit an ENT specialist.
However, the symptoms of throat itching and pain seem to come and go daily, and it appears that the symptoms cannot be completely cured.
Therefore, I purchased "Betadine Oral Spray" from the pharmacy to try to alleviate my long-term throat symptoms.
Is it safe to use this spray long-term? Thank you.

Dr. Hou Fangmin reply Pharmacology
Hello Mr.
Wang: Is it safe to use Povidone-iodine long-term? 1.
For healthy individuals using Povidone-iodine topically for oral and throat applications, systemic absorption of iodine is extremely low.
However, please note the following: 1.
Individuals with hyperthyroidism, other thyroid disorders, or those who have undergone radioactive iodine treatment due to hyperthyroidism should not use it unless they have achieved long-term remission.
2.
It should not be used within 4 weeks prior to radioactive iodine imaging studies or treatment for thyroid cancer.
3.
Be vigilant for early symptoms of hyperthyroidism, and thyroid function monitoring should be conducted if necessary.
4.
Patients taking lithium should not use it.
5.
Patients with renal insufficiency should exercise caution when applying Povidone-iodine to broken skin, and its use should be avoided in cases of renal impairment.
6.
It is intended for gargling only and should not be ingested.
It is advisable to be cautious for two to three months; if throat discomfort persists, it is best to consult an otolaryngologist to determine if there is inflammation or other symptoms.
Long-term use is not recommended.
Wishing you peace and joy.

More Info
Povidone-Iodine oral spray, commonly known as Betadine, is an antiseptic solution that is often used for its antimicrobial properties to help relieve symptoms associated with throat discomfort, such as itching and pain. However, the question of whether it is safe for long-term use is a nuanced one that requires careful consideration of various factors.
Firstly, while Povidone-Iodine is effective in killing bacteria and viruses, its long-term use is generally not recommended without medical supervision. This is primarily due to the potential for adverse effects and the risk of developing thyroid issues. Povidone-Iodine can lead to systemic absorption of iodine, which may affect thyroid function, particularly in individuals with pre-existing thyroid conditions, such as hyperthyroidism or those undergoing radioactive iodine treatment. Therefore, if you have any history of thyroid disease, it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider before using this product regularly.
Moreover, prolonged use of Povidone-Iodine can lead to irritation of the oral and throat mucosa. While it is designed for topical application, frequent use may disrupt the natural flora of the mouth and throat, potentially leading to secondary infections or other complications. It is also important to note that Povidone-Iodine should not be ingested, and care should be taken to avoid swallowing any residual spray after use.
In your case, since you are experiencing persistent throat discomfort, it would be advisable to consult with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist for a thorough evaluation. The symptoms you describe could be indicative of underlying conditions such as chronic pharyngitis, allergies, or even gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which may require a different treatment approach. A healthcare professional can provide a more comprehensive assessment and recommend appropriate therapies that may include lifestyle modifications, other medications, or even allergy testing if necessary.
If you find that Povidone-Iodine provides temporary relief, it may be suitable for short-term use, particularly during flare-ups of throat discomfort. However, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely and avoid using it as a long-term solution without guidance from a healthcare provider.
In summary, while Povidone-Iodine oral spray can be effective for short-term relief of throat symptoms, its long-term use is not generally recommended due to potential side effects and the risk of thyroid dysfunction. It is crucial to seek medical advice to address the underlying causes of your throat discomfort and to explore safer, more effective long-term treatment options. Always prioritize communication with your healthcare provider regarding any over-the-counter medications you choose to use, especially for chronic symptoms.
