Ingesting iodine?
Hello doctor, I accidentally drank water from a cup that had come into contact with a cotton swab soaked in povidone-iodine.
It has been a few hours and I haven't experienced any unusual symptoms.
Is there any danger in accidentally ingesting a small amount of povidone-iodine? What should I do?
123, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/03/05
Dr. Xiao Yongxun reply Family Medicine
Dear Mr.
123: Povidone-iodine (PVP-I), also known as Excellent-iodine, is a polymer of povidone and iodine.
It contains 9-12% iodine.
Its mechanism of action involves the release of iodine, leading to microbial death.
Clinically, it is not recommended for ingestion or use on oral mucosa; however, since you have only had a small amount come into contact with your lips and enter your mouth, it should theoretically pose no harm.
Furthermore, since PVP-I is a water-soluble solution, rinsing your mouth and drinking plenty of water should suffice.
If you have further questions or concerns, it is advisable to discuss them with your family physician.

More Info
Accidental ingestion of Povidone-Iodine can raise concerns, especially if you are unsure about its potential effects on your health. Povidone-Iodine is an antiseptic commonly used for skin disinfection and in some oral preparations. While it is generally safe for topical use, ingestion can lead to different outcomes depending on the amount consumed and individual health factors.
Risks of Ingesting Povidone-Iodine
1. Iodine Toxicity: Povidone-Iodine contains iodine, which, in large amounts, can lead to iodine toxicity. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and in severe cases, it can affect thyroid function.
2. Gastrointestinal Irritation: Even small amounts can cause irritation to the gastrointestinal tract, leading to symptoms such as stomach upset or discomfort.
3. Thyroid Function: Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production, but excessive iodine can lead to thyroid dysfunction, including hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, particularly in individuals with pre-existing thyroid conditions.
4. Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may have an allergic reaction to iodine, which could manifest as skin rashes, itching, or more severe reactions like difficulty breathing.
Recommendations for Management
1. Monitor Symptoms: Since you mentioned that you have not experienced any adverse symptoms after several hours, continue to monitor your condition. If you develop symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain, seek medical attention promptly.
2. Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help dilute any iodine that may have been ingested. This can also help flush it out of your system.
3. Avoid Further Exposure: Ensure that you do not consume any more products containing Povidone-Iodine until you have consulted a healthcare professional.
4. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If you have any concerns or if symptoms develop, it is advisable to contact a healthcare provider or poison control center for further guidance. They can provide specific recommendations based on your health history and the amount ingested.
5. Emergency Care: If you experience severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or severe abdominal pain, seek emergency medical care immediately.
Conclusion
While accidental ingestion of a small amount of Povidone-Iodine may not lead to immediate severe consequences, it is essential to remain vigilant and monitor for any symptoms. The best course of action is to stay hydrated and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns or if symptoms arise. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to health-related issues.
