Redness of the glans?
Hello Doctor: My glans has been persistently red.
I usually maintain cleanliness and do not excessively use body wash, but it remains red.
During erections, the glans appears to have some sort of tear, resembling dryness, but it is neither painful nor itchy.
How can I improve this condition? Is this balanitis? I have consulted a doctor who said it was nothing to worry about, but it hasn't improved, and I am quite concerned.
Thank you for your response.
Perhaps someone has asked this before, but I wanted to inquire again.

Hello: The glans has been persistently red.
Please consult a urologist at the hospital.
If the doctor says it is normal, then it is normal.
The color of the glans varies from person to person; some may have a reddish hue while others may appear whiter.
As long as it is within the normal range, that is fine.
Additionally, there is a slight tear that resembles a dryness issue.
Please refrain from using soap or body wash for cleaning for a week and see how it goes.
Thank you for your inquiry.

More Info
Persistent redness on the glans (the head of the penis) can be a source of concern for many patients. It’s important to understand that while the symptoms you describe—such as redness, dryness, and a feeling of tearing—can be alarming, they are not always indicative of a serious condition. Here’s a comprehensive look at potential causes and solutions for persistent redness on the glans.
Possible Causes
1. Irritation or Allergic Reaction: One of the most common causes of redness on the glans is irritation from soaps, lotions, or even laundry detergents. Even if you are careful with hygiene, certain products can cause allergic reactions or irritation. It’s advisable to use mild, unscented soaps and avoid any products that contain harsh chemicals.
2. Balanitis: This is an inflammation of the glans, which can be caused by infections (bacterial or fungal), poor hygiene, or skin conditions. Symptoms can include redness, swelling, and sometimes discharge. Since you mentioned that your doctor has diagnosed you and said it’s not a concern, it may be that they did not find signs of infection or significant inflammation.
3. Dry Skin: The glans can become dry, especially if it is not exposed to moisture regularly. This can lead to cracking or a tearing sensation. Using a gentle moisturizer specifically designed for sensitive skin can help alleviate dryness.
4. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): While you mentioned that there is no pain or itching, it’s still important to consider the possibility of STIs, which can sometimes present with subtle symptoms. If there is any doubt, it’s wise to consult with a healthcare provider for testing.
5. Dermatological Conditions: Conditions such as psoriasis or eczema can also affect the genital area, leading to redness and irritation. These conditions may require specific treatments, including topical steroids or other medications.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Maintain Good Hygiene: Continue to keep the area clean, but avoid over-washing, which can strip natural oils and lead to dryness. Use lukewarm water and a gentle, unscented soap.
2. Moisturize: Consider applying a fragrance-free moisturizer to the glans to combat dryness. Products designed for sensitive skin or specifically for genital areas are preferable.
3. Avoid Irritants: Identify and eliminate any potential irritants from your routine. This includes soaps, lotions, and even certain types of clothing that may cause friction.
4. Consult a Specialist: If the redness persists despite good hygiene and moisturizing, it may be beneficial to see a dermatologist or a urologist. They can provide a more thorough examination and may suggest treatments such as topical antifungals, steroids, or other medications if necessary.
5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in symptoms. If you notice increased redness, swelling, or any discharge, seek medical attention promptly.
6. Consider Lifestyle Factors: Stress, diet, and overall health can impact skin conditions. A balanced diet, adequate hydration, and stress management techniques can contribute to overall skin health.
Conclusion
Persistent redness on the glans can be caused by a variety of factors, ranging from simple irritation to more complex dermatological conditions. While it’s reassuring that your doctor has assessed the situation and deemed it not serious, ongoing symptoms warrant further investigation if they do not improve. Maintaining good hygiene, avoiding irritants, and possibly consulting with a specialist can help you find relief and peace of mind. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare provider about any concerns you have regarding your symptoms.
