Vomiting during lunch after not having breakfast?

In the past 2 to 3 days, I haven't eaten breakfast because I was off in the mornings, and I've been having lunch together.
The lunch dishes felt a bit greasy, and I didn't have a good appetite during lunch.
After finishing lunch, I felt a bit nauseous.
While brushing my teeth, I accidentally pressed my tongue, which triggered a gag reflex, and I ended up vomiting what I had just eaten.
Moving on to dinner, my appetite wasn't very good either.
Although I didn't vomit, I had congee for dinner and continued to drink water, which made me feel a bit better.

Doctor, does skipping breakfast affect gastrointestinal health? Or is it due to my high stress levels? Thank you.

Skipping breakfast can indeed have implications for your digestive health, and your recent experiences highlight some of these potential issues. When you skip breakfast, especially after a night of fasting, your body may react in several ways that can affect your digestive system.

Firstly, breakfast is often referred to as the most important meal of the day for a reason. After a night of sleep, your body wakes up in a fasted state, and your blood sugar levels are typically low. Eating breakfast helps to replenish your energy stores and kick-starts your metabolism for the day. When you skip this meal, you may experience low energy levels, which can lead to decreased appetite later in the day. This can create a cycle where you end up eating larger meals later, potentially leading to discomfort or digestive issues, as you experienced with your oily lunch.

Moreover, not eating breakfast can lead to increased acidity in the stomach. When the stomach is empty for an extended period, it continues to produce gastric acid, which can lead to feelings of nausea or discomfort, especially when you finally do eat. This might explain your experience of feeling a bit nauseous after your lunch. Additionally, if the lunch you consumed was particularly oily or rich, it could exacerbate feelings of indigestion, especially if your stomach was already sensitive from having been empty for so long.

Your experience of feeling the urge to vomit after brushing your teeth could also be related to an empty stomach. The act of brushing your teeth can stimulate the gag reflex, particularly if your stomach is already unsettled. This is not uncommon, especially if you have not eaten for a while and then consume a heavier meal.

Stress can also play a significant role in digestive health. High levels of stress can lead to various gastrointestinal issues, including nausea, changes in appetite, and even conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). If you are feeling stressed, it could certainly contribute to your digestive discomfort. Stress can affect the way your body processes food and can lead to symptoms such as bloating, gas, and changes in bowel habits.

In terms of your question about whether skipping breakfast affects digestive health, the answer is yes. Regularly skipping breakfast can lead to a range of digestive issues, including poor appetite regulation, increased acidity, and potential overeating later in the day, which can all contribute to discomfort and digestive distress.

To improve your digestive health, consider reintroducing breakfast into your routine. A balanced breakfast that includes a mix of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats can help stabilize your blood sugar levels and set a positive tone for the rest of the day. Foods like oatmeal with nuts, yogurt with fruit, or whole-grain toast with avocado can provide the nutrients your body needs without overwhelming your digestive system.

Additionally, managing stress through relaxation techniques, regular exercise, and adequate sleep can also help improve your digestive health. If you continue to experience digestive issues or if your symptoms worsen, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare professional for further evaluation and personalized advice.
