Post-Circumcision Care: Managing Sensitivity and Discomfort After 23 Days - Urology

23 days post circumcision?

Hello, Doctor! I originally had severe phimosis, and it has been 23 days since my circumcision.
Now, when I walk, there are certain angles where my pants rub against the glans, causing sensitivity and discomfort.
There are also some areas at the base of the glans that still show slight bruising.
I would like to ask whether I should wear regular pants to help the glans get accustomed to it, or should I opt for looser pants to avoid friction with the glans? Additionally, can soaking in warm water help improve the swelling around the area behind the glans, as well as the sensitivity and bruising while walking? Thank you, Doctor!

P, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/06/19

Hello: If the wound has healed, you can wear pants and walk normally to help the glans adapt.
Bruising can be soaked in warm water for 15 minutes.
Additionally, avoid spicy and irritating foods.
Some localized swelling may take a long time to fully resolve.
Wishing you good health.

Post-circumcision care is an important aspect of recovery, especially in the weeks following the procedure. After 23 days, it is not uncommon to experience sensitivity and discomfort, particularly in the area of the glans (the head of the penis). Here are some recommendations and insights based on your concerns:
1. Sensitivity and Discomfort: It is normal to experience heightened sensitivity in the glans after circumcision. This is because the glans, which was previously covered by the foreskin, is now exposed and may take time to adjust to the new environment. The sensitivity can be exacerbated by friction from clothing, especially if the fabric is rough or tight.

2. Clothing Choices: It is advisable to wear loose-fitting underwear and pants to minimize friction against the glans. Tight clothing can irritate the sensitive area and prolong discomfort. Opting for breathable fabrics like cotton can also help reduce irritation and allow for better air circulation, which is beneficial for healing.

3. Bruising and Swelling: The presence of bruising and swelling (edema) around the base of the glans is not unusual in the post-operative period. This can occur due to the surgical procedure itself and the healing process. While some swelling may persist for a few weeks, it should gradually decrease. If the swelling is significant or accompanied by pain, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider.

4. Warm Baths: Soaking in warm water can be soothing and may help alleviate discomfort. Warm baths can promote blood flow to the area, which can aid in the healing process. However, ensure that the water is not too hot, as excessive heat can cause further irritation. Additionally, avoid submerging the area in water for prolonged periods if there are any signs of infection or if your doctor has advised against it.

5. Hygiene: Maintaining good hygiene is crucial during the healing process. Gently clean the area with mild soap and water, and ensure it is thoroughly dried afterward. Avoid using harsh soaps or products that may cause irritation.

6. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep an eye on any changes in symptoms. If you notice increased redness, swelling, discharge, or if the pain worsens, it is important to seek medical attention. These could be signs of infection or complications that may require further evaluation.

7. Gradual Adjustment: As your body heals, the sensitivity should gradually decrease. It is important to give your body time to adjust to the changes. If discomfort persists beyond what is expected or if you have concerns about your recovery, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice.

In summary, wearing loose-fitting clothing, maintaining proper hygiene, and soaking in warm water can help manage sensitivity and discomfort after circumcision. It is essential to monitor your symptoms and consult a healthcare professional if you have any concerns about your recovery. Healing takes time, and being gentle with your body during this period is crucial for a successful recovery.
